  • One last try!

Here's my story: Decent enough at 16 to play with a 6 handicap even though my swing was an ugly outside in up on my toes at impact. Now 62 and still unable to shake the outside in swing and my score hasn't been anywhere near single digits since I was in high school, too inconsistent. I have no confidence on the tee although all other clubs are at least satisfactory. Even when I try to swing inside out you can see the paint from the tee on my driver's bottom pointing from front inside to back outside, just the opposite of what I want. I'm normally very coordinated excelling in most sports but this has been frustrating me for almost 50 years, even with the occasional lessons. I even gave my clubs away a month ago only to build another set and buy a square head driver. I guess I'm hooked!

Without seeing your swing it's hard for me (or anyone else) to comment, but it sounds like a typical "over-the-top" move. That in itself will not help you -- it's just phrase, an overworked one at that. The local pro here calls it, I think helpfully, "over-the-bottom," by which he means that the upper body is beating the lower body to the ball, producing, inevitably, an out-to-in swing path. You might try making [what will feel like] a very aggressive rotational move with your hips to initiate the downswing. This might produce other undesirable effects, but it's hard to see how over-the-top could be among them.

      hi
try taking only a 3/4 swing with the driver and swing just fast enough to get the club head into a "in to out " swing. you wont lose as much distance as you think and once you relax and and get that feeling of coming from the inside you can move towards a fuller swing.
as David said check your not swaying back and keep the right knee pointing towards the back of the ball.

        Hi bt,

There are a lot of drills for conditioning the inside to outside swing. What really hits home though is the feel of what the body is doing to get that effect, so this video may be useful. You can compare the feel and positions of your present swing with those in this drill, and you will see where the variances are. It may be casting instead of dropping, or the right elbow may not be dropping to the hip, or the lower body not shifting first.

I sent this in an earlier thread. I still constantly work on this, with and without clubs, in my living room, wherever. If you are able to "feel" what it takes to do this, the chances are you will not come over the top. You have seen many pros doing this, in part or in total, and checking the sequence and actions of the body and the positions of the club, in preparation for shots.

It also shows the pump drill towards the end, which someone mentioned earlier on. It should be clarified that many people misinterpret the "pump" as being dropped straight down, whereas it should be "dropped" on plane. I used to make that mistake, and what that does is disrupts the flow and plane of the swing. It was always Tom Watson's favourite drill. Both Faldo and Price in their heydays with Leadbetter also used this drill a lot, as have all who followed.

I hope this is of interest,

        Ted

          Ted,
The web address you gave (http://www.golfdigest.com/instructio...cleanslotdrill)
is no longer working apparently. Any other way to get there?

            Re: One last try!

I have started going to the range regularly now and this is what is happening. I am hitting every club pretty well with the exception of the driver. I started ensuring that my chin is over my left shoulder on the backswing which seems to give me a better shoulder turn which, in turn, seems to give me more time to think about using my hips to start my downswing. I've always started my swing with my arms and hands and only now seem to be able to feel when they are pulled through the swing. Even the 3 wood shots are going straight and I can see on the ground that the line through the grass is straight at the target. But with the driver anything can happen, my wrists may turn one way or another and the outside/in is more prevalent. Why this happens with a club only slightly longer than my 3 wood remains a mystery, but with the driver exception, I'm seeing progress. One thing I can't feel. Hogan's says the left hand should supinate at impact. When I try that I lose all strength in the swing and the swing feels like I've never played golf before. Thanks for all of the input.

                Hi bt,

Sorry I missed your last post, as I was not on the computer for a couple of days.

Give this a try. This url should open a advanced search page of Golf Digest,

                http://www.golfdigest.com/search/que..._submit=submit

Click the Search button, and the "in the slot" drill should be one of the results listed.

As been said, without seeing you swing, it is hard to suggest a correction. But, I have had students that defy normal corrective measure, usually I have them do the Lee Trevino swing .... lol .... in other words swing way outside going back, you will be left with swinging back inside as your only option on the downswing. Lee Trevino did this with an open stance and with a very aggressive hip slide to straighten it out, but if you do this with a square stance, oddly enough people with an over the top move to begin with, end up with a normal downswing. This is mostly a mental fix, because more then likely you have come over the top for so long, you ingrain a server inside take away, which forces an OTT move. Give that a try for awhile, see if it helps.
