  • Count yogi

Many years ago an avid golfer friend of mine obtained Count Yogi's book and started to employ the technique Count Yogi advocated. I, skeptically, became interested in learning more about the system. We started with chip shots. To my surprise when the balls were swept off the turf, rather than being struck on the downswing, more spin was imparted and the ball "checked." The major keys to swinging like Yogi are: relaxed posture (tension free); the front foot is toed out at a 45 degree angle; the ball is forward of center in the stance; the hands are behind the ball; the takeaway is long and low and well to the inside; the main source of power is the continuous motion of the club from the backswing to the downswing which allows the centrifugal force to be utilized; the ball is struck without a divot being taken; once the ball is struck the head comes up and follows the flight of the ball; the follow through is a relaxed completion of the entire motion and takes one to a balanced finish, tall and erect. The philosophy of the system is physical (emphasis on rhythm, balance, muscle looseness and lack of tension) and mental (the physical system would not be effective unless an infallible mental routine was employed). Contrary to some of the blogs I have read Yogi was well ahead of his time and worthy of study. I am presently using his technique (as well as I can) and have been experiencing amazing results. Wedge shots are spinning and full swings result in long, accurate shots. What else is there (oh yes, putting, which I have not tried yet since we are in the middle of winter). Take a look at his swing on Youtube at age 84!!

Hi and welcome to the site.

That's interesting, there have been a few threads on this site about him. I will take a look at the YouTube Video, thanks.
