  • "skull"ing Fix

Hi, I am new to this forum, and kind of new to Golf too!

I have been working on my swing, grip etc, and seem to get rid of slice and I am now able to hit the ball straight or slight draw. Feels great, whenever I do that - almost 50% times!

Other 50%, I seem to hit the ball on the top and contact is not in the middle. Can anyone help me to fix this in anyway? I am ready to hit thousands of balls or do hours of drill...

    Pls help..

    Hi golfaddict,

The fat shots could be because you are losing your spine angle. Here is another post which discusses how to check.

When in your backyard or at the range, you can use a folding lawn chair, and ease your bum against the chairback and see what happens.

It could also be from coming down too steep, or over the top, but you may be good for those if you are hitting draws and fades OK on demand.

For over the top, you can check by placing a shoe box or piece of lumber just outside of the ball target line and swinging, without hitting the box.

For too steep and over the top, stick a broken shaft or stick into the ground, perpendicular to the target line and angled so the end closest to you leans over the top of the ball, with a clearance of about 4 inches. You should be able to swing and hit the ball, without running into shaft or stick.

I just thought of substitute for the angled shaft. Take a length of wire clothes hanger and bend it at right angles, and stick one leg in the ground and the other leg overhanging the ball

        Re: "skull"ing Fix

Most fat shots I see on the course usually have alot to do with a poor weight shift forward during the down swing into impact. If you leave too much wieght on the rear foot in the down swing, this will cause the low point of the swing arc to occurr behind of the ball. Some folks call this a "reverse pivot". What ever you want to call it, it usually causes the rear shoulder to drop, and/or a bending of the rear knee. A good "one piece take away" can help with this issue. There are other causes, such as those Rotator listed. A good check list for skulling shots might be to check; hittting from the top, the beginning of the back swing, dipping the front knee in the back swing, dipping the rear knee in the down swing, dropping the rear shoulder too much at address, or during the downswing, and proper weight transfer for what ever swing you are using. A good drill is to hit a few balls with the majority (80/20) of your weight on your front foot at impact. This will help you feel where your weight should be at impact with the ball. If weight transfer is your problem, once you get it right, your divots will start more consistently in the same spot in your hitting area of the down swing. Then all you have to do is place the ball in back of your divot. GJS

Straight left arm if you are right handed, and keep your lower body somewhat quite, and make sure you turn your shoulders, not drop your right shoulder

My height is only 5'5", and use standard clubs. I was wondering if I should choke down with my grip..
Is there anything I should take care of, while choking down.

                  Hi golfaddict,

You will notice that the shorter LPGA players have flatter swings. Mi Hyun Kim, who probably is around 5'-0", is a wonderful model to watch if you can see a video on you tube. She uses full length clubs and is a superb ball striker. She also uses a lot of lofted woods and hybrids and so the longest iron as such is probably a 6. I think what you will notice the most about her swing is the tempo. The timing and sequencing is outstanding.

With the irons, there may be an issue with the lies being too upright for you, but if you can live with that, it may not be worth the money to have them adjusted. You probably notice there is space under the toe of the head, when you set up. There is a certain amount of "droop" during the swing which will lessen the space. Another fine tuning point you may be coping with all right is when you choke down, the swingweight will have decreased. If you don't have any problems with "feeling the head", don't worry about it.

In future, if you are fitted for clubs, these could be looked into.
