If you are a good player, you have the same reason for the block that Tiger used to frequently have (not so much now).
I started to explain it in words and it got a bit complicated, so I found this video which explains all the variations.
You can also see if you are taking the club back too much inside, by checking where your shaft is at the half way back position, when the club is hands high and the shaft is parallel to the ground and on your toe line, and parallel to the ball/target line. If the shaft is inside of the toe line, it's been taken too far inside, because as you can see in the video, it's at that point the club should be going up the plane line.
I wanted to insert this here, because I've referred people to this video for their problems.
I just don't want people to think just because they are tracing the ball/target line with the butt end, they will resolve their problems, because you can do that by lifting your arms away from the body and manipulating them separate from the body, and by other manipulations.
I think it is important to stress the need to keep the body and the arms connected, the arms in front of the body throughout the swing.
If you don't do this, Brian will not be pleased with you..
I totally stand with Brian on this.
You may not be able to make a 90 degree shoulder turn with this, because you can make your shoulder turn and arms separate from and outrace the body turn, but you will not gain anything from this. You take what your body is capable of. Tiger, Mickelson, Adam Scott have all reduced their backswing length and have become better players.
