  • Quick Backswing

I have a chronic problem with my swing. I am a 12 handicap, and am able to hit like a five handicap on the practice tee. When I step onto the course, my backswing becomes so quick, that it rivals the speed of my forward swing. As hard as I try, I am unable to slow it down. The longer the club, the more inclined I am to swing too quickly. The result is that I come over the top, especially with the driver, and snap hook the shot.

    Any ideas about a cure?

    Hi dseeman,

What's good for V J Singh may be good for you.

He does the "1" - "2" - "3" count, sometimes as he says he says that out loud.

"1" is taking it back, "2" is at the top and "3" is the impact.

You can come up with variations, to suit your tempo. Perhaps, "21" - "and-a 22" - "and-a 23" for a slower tempo, with the "anda's" to stretch out the break in between.

You can figure out your own mantra and practice it at the range and use it in play.

      hi
much as Ted says but i count 1 and 2 3, i add the and between 1 and 2. so 1 is start of back swing and the "and " is the time taken to swing back, 2 is the set point in the back swing and 3 is the impact on the ball.
you could try "Tour tempo" its a book and cd and gets you to swing in a tempo of 21-7 or 24-8 or how i swing at 27-9. there is a slower 30-9 swing speed too.
      i found it very helpful.
      cheers

Interesting that VJ has to do this, and thanks to you and Bill for the additional input.

I've just had a lesson to look at my < 50 > yd pitching problems and it looks like my whole swing - especially the transition - is way to fast for these shots.

I'm a naturally quick, walk up, hit it, walk after it, player anyhow and I suspect that I suspect that whenever I'm under (self induced maybe) pressure on the course that I have a tendency to speed up my swing - which may be behind my "tearing my hair out" problems posted elsewhere.

So I've been trying different variations of your suggestions on the range, reasonably successfully - though I seem to need a different tempo for half swings and for full - the trouble is that so far I'm reverting to type on the course, but I guess that is normal of any swing change in the early days.

          Re: Quick Backswing

          hi
i made a tape of the "Tour tempo" that i pay in the car as i go to the course, for 30 minuets all i hear is the swing tempo "1 and 2-swing" over and over so by the time i get to the first tee its still in my head.
a few practice swing to help get my swing in tempo and then hit my drive.
i feel it has helped me in i don't get so nervious when i hit my first drive of the day and it helps me keep in tempo for the rest of the round.
if i know i have a hard shot what i do as i get to about 70 feet of the ball is i slow my walk to the ball and see the shot i need to hit and then start couning out the tempo in my head till i get to the ball.
i does work for me but it does mean you talk less to your playing partners

          cheers
          Bill
