  • Staked Tree Relief

The course I play on has lots of staked trees. My friends and I cannot agree when we can get relief. My question is:

"My ball lands close to a staked tree. The tree interferes with my swing when I aim at the hole. But I could come out sideways (eg on to the fairway) without any swing interference. Can I take relief from the staked tree or must I play out sideways?"

    Thanks

Assuming that the staked tree is an obstruction according to the local rules then you are entitled to relief and don't have to play sideways.

[Rule 24 says ] Interference by an immovable obstruction occurs when a ball lies in or on the obstruction, or when the obstruction interferes with the player’s stance or the area of his intended swing.

Presumably you intend giving the ball another biff towards the hole so take your drop and good luck.

I'll take a stab at this.

The Rules of Golf do not provide for relief from staked or otherwise trees. However, most local courses provide for relief from staked trees, in order to protect the young trees.

In that case, I would believe the relief should be taken in a manner consistent with other rules, i.e. no closer to the hole. I also believe that the intent is to give full relief to be able to fairly swing the club.

      P.S. Edit

While I posted this, I see bdbl answered. Anyways, I did a search, which confirms our answers, in case your friend requires further substantiation.
