  • Lateral Hip Move

    First,
Greetings to all of you also afflicted by the golf disease.
I decided to join the site after reading the discussion about lateral hip move.
It really made sense to clear the way for the completion of the swing by laterally shifting the hips to the left. I studied swings of Tiger and others and noticed it was rotating the hips more than anything.
Without practice I tried out the idea on the course yesterday with mixed results. It really helped my short irons, but did nothing for the driver.
Now, I've been doing a lot of bad-straining stuff this week and mine is achy, so the results may be skewered because I was afraid to cut loose with the hips.
But any other thoughts on the hip turn?
And also, what's with the early wrist cock stuff? I've always heard that was not good.

    Re: Lateral Hip Move

    hi
the use of lateral hip movement or slid only works if your are trying to hit the right shot.
by this i mean if your normal shot is a draw then if you have a lot of lateral slid then it will fight againt the rotation of your normal draw swing and you will strugle to get your left hip out the way and it better to work on rotation rather then lateral slid for a draw.
if you hit a fade most of the time then a lateral slid works as the open stance helps clear the hips.
one thing if playing with a hip slid when using a fade! you must have flex in your right knee and have it pointing to towards the ball with a bit of tenision in it. you need a bit of tension to stop the hips swaying back in the back swing. you only sway your hips towards the target on the downswing, there in no hips sway on the backswing.
just stand infront of a mirror and watch yourself swing and you will see if your right knee controls the sway on the backswing.
what the lateral swing does it to help keep the face of the club loooking down the targe line longer but if you have even a little back sway then it tends to throw you off into an "out to in" swing. so you must use your right knee to control any attempt to saw back.
why the hip sway might be working for you on your short game may be because you are opening your stance more and you may have a more closed stance when using your driver and can't get your hip out the way as easely and thats why it not working so well when using you drive.
the work of the right knee plays a bit part in the swing of golfers that use a lateral slid.
    cheers
    bill

Thanks Bill, I'll watch that sway to the right and try to get that knee to hold it off.
