  • Hello from Tampa

I'm new to this site. I am 55 years old and started playing golf wen I was an early teen, and played on my high school golf team. I've really never had any professional instruction except for one or two one day lessons. I played fairly regularly from the early 90's through 2004, and then basically due to circumstances (mainly time) I all but stopped, even though I live on a golf course. When I stopped playing my handicap was 16. I just started playing regularly (once or twice a week) about 3 months ago. My driver swing speed is in the mid 90's (to my son's surprise) and I can hit my 8.5* titliest driver near 270 on the fly. The biggest problem I'm having is hitting my irons on the toe, and pull hooking to the left. I hope to get some tips on driving my handicap down to where it was before, or lower.

    Hi,

Interesting user name. It's the same configuration as the Canadian postal code. alpha-numeric-alpha numeric-alpha-numeric.

Regarding the irons being hit on the toe and the pull hooking, one cause may be you are losing your spine angle, either straightening your legs, raising your body or head up. This will obviously cause the toe contact, and also as you pull away, the arms will try to stretch out to save the contact and at this point the face will be closing. Toe contact and closing face = pull hook.

There are many ways to test for this and there are any drills. Without suggesting any particular one, I would suggest you use the search function above as there are many discussions on this subject, or google "spine angle drill" as there are many videos and articles.

You will then find something that works for you, as some fixes may not.

Let us know how you do with this, and what works, as it will help some others, who have similar problems.

    Ted

Thanks Ted, I've already started looking at the suggestions on the site. One thing I found is that I have the club gripped too far in my palm vs the finders of my left hand. I've also been looking at posture lessons. Hopefully, in a little while I'll be heading to the range to work on this stuff.

In terms of the user name w9r1x4, if you look closely grouping the letters and numbers together you'll get WRX 914. The name came from my car, a 1973 Porsche 914 with a 2003 Subaru WRX engine. It's a 2300lb 255hp mid-engined rocket that I built. You can see it here:
