  • Newbie with new fitted clubs and lost

First off greetings everyone from "sunny" Buffalo, NY

I am a beginner golfer, who for the last few years had been playing with a set of "off the rack" golf clubs. At 6' 5" tall, I later learned this was all wrong.

So after a few lessons to further understand the game of golf, I invested a few bucks got a NIKE 5900 driver, NIKE Sumo 5 & 7 wood & recently a set of Mizuno MX100's (fitted at 2 degrees upright & 1" extended).

Since buying these new irons, I feel like a beginner all over again. My game has gone right back to where I was in the beginning

Is there an adjustment period when you are correctly fitted with new clubs or are my friends correct in saying if you can hit one set of clubs, you should be able to hit any set of clubs

Any help would be geatly appreciated

I think that is a garbage statement, from my experience. I had a set of clubs supposedly fitted on line and developed a terrible shanking problem. My brother in law gave me a set when he upgraded and the shank disappeard completely. After I was sure it was gone I stuck with the old set and sold the new set. Admittedly the new set I was using were a generic and so a cheap set but those shanks were on 90* of strokes. The only difference between them was an inch in length and the balance never really felt right. Anyway the dreaded shanks vanished and has never returned and I am still using the second hand set.

Re: Newbie with new fitted clubs and lost

To a degree your friends are right. However, I'm currently experimenting with seriously long clubs having moved from relatively 'standard' clubs and also playing short clubs.

The difference is how I swing - I'm working towards a very body driven swing with very little arm action. I'm also a rotund fellow with short arms. So with the overlength clubs that fit my natural setup, I setup very tall and my arms have a hard time getting around my middle. However, when I don't over-use my arms, the clubs are a perfect fit. If I lift my arms at all more than their natural rise, then I can't get my arms back down due to my midsection, and I have to really manipulate the club to save the shot - which never works very well.

So, while longer clubs fit my setup and - when swinging correctly - produce great shots, but with the shorter clubs, I can 'get away' with a swing miscue. You may be suffering the same affliction - the clubs fit your address position better, but are more penal for swing miscues.

Re: Newbie with new fitted clubs and lost

        Hi

I'm new to the forum yet i play golf off a six handicap, I started just like you having to "figure out" what works and what doesn't. I think the best thing for any golfer is to make sure they start with the correct basics that means going to a couple of lessons and making sure your stance, grip, posture and swing plane is correct. Once you got that set up correct you should be able to hit any clubs with relatively good accuracy

To begin with, thanks for all your tips, advice & sharing what each of you has gone through.

If I may though, "golfshooter", your experiences seen to match mine exactly. SHANK, SHANK, SHANK!! But my problem goes beyond that. If I go back to the old "off the rack" Dunlop Progressors, yes I get to "enjoy" my day but have to accept all my shots are going to push majorly right. So am stuck for the time being

Anyways, thanks one & all again...Have expressed my concerns with my professional about my new clubs & have an free "evaluation" lesson scheduled the end of this week

I just got a set of ci7 wilsons fitted on line and they play beautifully. I hope you solve your problem, just saying the word shank still sends shivers down my spine.
