  • Problems with my driving.

    Hi all.

I am 40 yrs old, and have been playing for nearly 2 years now and am loving the game with all of its emotional ups and downs. I am playing off about 20 but haven't got my official handicap yet.

My problem is my driving. I had never driven consistently up until about 4 weeks ago when I discovered the palm of my right hand (I am right handed) was coming of the grip in my backswing, and this seemed to be causing my consistent hooking. Having resolved this, my driving was great ! Long for me (landing about 220 yds) and consistently straight. But after a long visit to the driving range, everything has gone terribly wrong again, and even after trying everything, I don't know what's gone wrong. I'm back to hooking short and horrible. I was wondering whether my spell of good driving may have been just a rare 'blip' and it is usual to go through these kind of problems.

I went round my local course in 103 y'day having lost 5 balls hooked left !

    Any comments welcome...

    A frustrated Ken

Try to keep the grip in the fingertips, any pressure you feel on the grip should be applied to the right palm pressing the left thumb into your lifeline of the right palm. I had that same issue this season and my local pro showed me this. I hope it helps.

You were on the right trail with the right palm. Question, how would you hold a baseball bat, a hammer, or a tennis racket? In your palms, why would you hold a golf club in your fingers? Because everyone teaches it and it is wrong. When the club is put in the fingers you are inviting a snap hook. Put the club in the palms with both hands and do not rotate your forearms when swinging the club. Let you right and left arm bend during the swing. The radius of the swing arc will be shortened when you manage to figure this out and you will hit the ball straight and with good distance. The left wrist must never breakdown at any point in the swing, go through slowmotion swings and it will start to make since to you. Amatures can not master the traditional golf swing as it is taught by the big boys, only world class atheletics can accomplish it and they have their problems as well. bp
