  • Hello, new golfer, starting with blades

    Hey all,

After doing much research I decided to purchase Mizuno MP-57's as my first set of irons. I figure that if I can groove my swing, then I will have made a wise choice. So far, after playing about 90 holes or so, I can say that there is good news and bad news. The good news is that I am hitting the sweet spot horizontally each and every time, the bad news is that the vertical part does not always work out for me. On the longer irons, and to be honest, quite a bit with the shorter irons as well, I end up hitting below the sweet spot, though right in the center. I try to keep really loose and Zen-like with my swing, but I am still hitting too low on the club face. I plan to go a range soon and move the ball around in my stance, and work on my weight transfer to see if I can correct this. If anyone thinks I should be trying something else, feel free to let me know. I must say, I have never enjoyed being terrible at a sport until now, even on my worst days there are a couple great shots in there that keep me swinging and smiling.

try something more forgiving than blades

your swing has to be consistently on song to hit blades consistently well

FWIW i play off 15 and hit MP37's and its a struggle to find the sweetspot some days

Sounds like you are not hitting down on the ball. Try setting up so that your hands are slightly in front of the ball i.e. shaft will lean slightly forward - this will ensure that you catch the ball whilst the club is moving in a downward direction and more likley to strike the club in the sweet spot.

Just a technicality ... the MP-57 aren't blades. They are full Cavity Back irons.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the tips! Tomorrow I'll get out and let you know how hitting down on the ball went. As for whether they are blades or not, I'll leave that to you guys. I would say that "Full Cavity Back" is a big tent.

I tend to agree, but that IS what Mizuno themselves call the mp-57

A full cavity Grain Flow Forged design, compacted into an inspiring overhead profile, for both forgiveness and great shot-making.

              Mox,

I told my 57s that they weren't blades and they started crying. Thanks for bringing that up ;-). I noticed you are a Mizuno man thru and thru. Is their entire line as sweet as their irons in your opinion?

I was playing with cavity back irons and, for some reason, I decided to switch to Mizuno Zoid Pro irons. They are called muscle backs and I think they are semi blades (someone correct me if I`m wrong). To be honest, I switched to them because I was getting them really cheap. Anyhow, my ball striking has really improved since I bought them. Although I think it also has a lot to do with the training club I am using called the Tour Striker. I was on holiday in England recently and I played with a friend`s clubs - they were Callaway cavity backs - I really struggled. I just really like the slim look that I get when I look down on semi blades.

Re: Hello, new golfer, starting with blades

Well ... I used to play the MX-500 driver (and that was hugely long for me) and the F50 fairway wood (which was hard to play from anything but off the tee). This year I replaced them with the new MX-700 series.

The driver is a complete monster. It launches very high and has huge carry. I suggest a proper fitting though, since going with the same loft as my MX-500 resulted in too high a launch and loss of total distance. It stille goes up to 285m when i crush it, and even mishits are long and fairly straight. It is still possible to work the ball both left and right.

The MX-700 3w is a LOT easier to hit from fairway lies than the F50, and my 3w has become my "go-to" club in many situations.
The 5w is fine, but I rarely need it these days, since the 20deg hybrid is just as long but with a higher trajectory and a softer landing.

I'm quite impressed with the new woods, and definately recommend that you check them out if you are considering new clubs.

If you are in the UK, I suggest talking to Snainton Golf. They have an array of shafts with little or no added charge! Mine are the Aldila VS Proto.

I think my MP60s are much like your MP57s, but the 57s have a bigger sweetspot. Sweet forged feel that I can't imagine I will ever stray from. Grain Flow Forged forever for me!

My MP wedges have served me well, but are in for replacements, since the soft, soft metal wears the grooves fairly fast. I'm looking at the new MP T-10 wedges. I love the "360 grind" design, that is said to make it easier to open and close the clubface, and it is rumoured that the "quad-cut" grooves really spin the ball. I intend to test them against the Titleist Vokey spin-milled and the Cleveland CG-14 zip-grooved wedges (the latter being illegal for tour players from new year). Both the Titleist and the Cleveland need to impress massively to stray me from the Mizunos. Make mine BLACK!

Only the Bettinardi putters have failed to impress me, but it is very likely due to my bad technique more then the quality of the flatsticks.

Now, if only they would make a ball ... ;-)

Oh yes ... I recognize that feeling. It's like looking down at a razor, compared to looking down at a shoebox, once you get used to that sleek, slim top-line.

The strange thing is this - I hit it fat when I`m using cavity backs but hit it pure (most of the time) when I`m using the muscle backs. This is just my opinion of course, and I`m sure a lot of people will disagree with me, but I`m not sure that cavity backs are game improvement clubs.
