  • Save me from Therapy!

    Hi Guys

Been playing for a year now and reading the posts with great interest. Finally decided I should try one myself.

My problem is that I've recently developed a nasty hook. When I first started playing I nearly always sliced with the driver. I decided to leave it at home and try teeing off with other clubs. At first I stuck to my 21 degree hybrid and later when I felt more comfortable I tried the fairway woods.

I've now decided to try the driver again. At first things went well. I used a stronger grip, gripped down on the club a bit and swung slower. In this way about 75% of my drives would go straight. Trouble is, despite playing twice a week I'm getting inconsistant again, sometimes hooking, sometimes pushing to the right and, of course, sometimes getting it just right.

I could live with this but I've now developed a nasty hook with my other clubs which is very frustrating.

So the question is, should I put the driver back in the bag (not a great option) or should I use a weaker grip on all the other clubs.

Any suggestions would be welcome as because of the recession I can't afford the cost of therapy or lessons.

    Thanks for the help
    Kevin

    P.S. Playing off a 22 handicap.

    Hi kevin.

It is difficult to understand why your shots are so erratic without seeing a video of your swing. Is it possible to supply one?

      Brian,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I've followed the advice you've given to others with great interest so hopefully you'll be able to help me.

I'm planning a trip to the driving range next week (Irish weather permitting) so I'll so what I can do about a video.

      Kevin

Hooking the ball says to me, you are hitting left of target at impact and its` spinning more left as it travels.

If this describes your shot shape, you need to understand how you are delivering the clubface to the ball at impact, the ball flight tells you all you need to know about impact.

Hooks can be caused by out to in swing path and/or closed clubface. You mention you have strenghted your grip, i suspect you may be turning the clubface over to much.

Learn about ball flight laws and impact, if possible, get a pro to look at your swing, go to the range and experiment and explore, hitting the ball in different ways, try to control the ball with different deliveries of the clubface, make it fade and slice, make it draw and hook, make it go high and low, this is the best way to learn, by self discovery.

The golf ball will only do what you tell it it to do!

Thanks Adjani, I'll do what you suggest

Just a quick question is the swing different for longer shafted clubs to shorter ones or is it essentially the same?

Essentially the same, my swing only starts to change when i get to my wedges and start hitting more creative shaped shots.

Try not to focus on the swing, but on how you`re going to deliver the club face to the ball, the swing, stance, ball position will change naturally as you explore.

If you know how to hit a BIG hook and a BIG slice, then you will know how to hit one down the middle.

Spent a bit of time at the range last week and played yesterday. Two slices off the tee and no hooks. Elsewhere fairly straight as well.

Went back to basics. Taking a more neutral grip, swinging slower, trying to keep my upper arms and body connected and watching my alignment. Happy so far with the result, have lost a little distance but will settle for straight over distance any day.

              Thanks for the advice

Good posts Adjani, i agree with you wholeheartedly. nice to see someone address ball flight laws before mechanics. nice to see you are doing good too kevin. A draw/hook does tend to give more distance but you will always have the predisposition to pushes and hooks. Just minimising it will give you much more control over the ball, and that is better than whacking it longer but in the trees all the time.
