  • No Distance

I'm 61 years of age and after a couple of years laying of golf; I can't get my distance back. I'm now driving the ball around 225 yards, where I used to hit my driver 300+ yards. I have to hit a 6 iron from 150, what's wrong?

Sorry GWD but the guys are right. If you were 59 hitting the ball over 300 yards you could have made a lot of money on the senior long driving tours.

I daily come into contact with people who over estimate their distances. Have yet to come in contact with one who underestimates.

When I was 59 I had a handicap of 2, now my handicap is 14. I just can't seem to get it back, my timing is off. I have tried many drills, earley wrist cock and holding it through my swing. I have tired late hand release by move the ball more forward in my stance. I'm working on building up my forearms and upper body. Someone please help.

Stop trying to squeeze extra yards from your swing, relax and enjoy playing golf

              That`s my advice.

No, not because of that. I know a 65 year old who hits it 320+yds but just doen't want to get into all of that traveling ect.

I just find it har to believe that you can lose that kind of distance just from a few years break. I mean you had it at one time, do what you did last time to get it....

I went to the range today. I havnt been able to play for 4 weeks due to work and weather. Summer time I try to play at least 3 times a week, Iam like caged animal at the moment.

Maybe the break has done me some good though. The first few balls as expected were a bit ugly, could'nt get them up in the air, then as all golfers are aware a little thought sometimes alerts us to some technique or other which works. I dont suppose it lasts too long as we amatuers always seem to drift back to type and forget what was initially making the shot work, any way as I was searching for something to bring my swing together I realised my arms were flailing a bit at impact, by this I mean they were not close to my chest at impact. The more I focussed on keeping my arms close to my chest at impact the better the strike, and the ball was flying off the face and soaring high in the sky to be fair probably some of the best ball striking I have hit for a long long time .

Another point, my strike to the club face is usually centre/heel. Today it was the opposite.

I remember a friend telling me about this tip many years ago he reffered to it as pirouetting If you watch a ballet dancer pirouett, they pull thier arms in close to their body which gives them more rotational Speed.. It seems to make sense dont you think. So GWD, give it a go and let us know if it helps
