  • Hi Im New =0)

Hi Im Carol and I found this site as I searched through the internet for golfing information for my son...

My son is about to turn 5 and decided he wants to play golf.... Recently he was present when some adults were driving (hitting--not sure what the appropriate word is) balls in the field.. They showed my son how to swing and hit and the rest is history....

He has been requesting to watch golf on tv and wants to play... Unfortunately neither his dad or I play golf and its a very expensive hobby.. A friend of mine who is a avid player told me about a program that helps children who are from lower income families so they can play.. Whether its a golf club, or hitting at the range. I am unable to find the organization he was talking about....

If anyone can guide me in the right direction I would so greatly appreciate it. Though my son is only going to be 5--he is already in school and is advanced intellectually, as well as taller then average for his age.. He isn't your typical 5 year old.

Any thoughts or ideas would be so greatly appreciated.

    Hi Carol,

In the States, there's usually a local "First Tee" program - designed to introduce youngsters to the game.

It may serve you well to head to your local golf club and ask them about opportunities to get your boy into the game.

Thank you very much for the information... I will contact them on Monday and see what I can arrange for Joey... I figure if I can even get him a club or 2 (my friend told me to get him a wood and a iron and that the local facility will know what I need.. Then take him out on the range to hit some balls..

That was the name of the program he mentioned... I will be checking it out and Ill keep searching for him as well...

      Thank you again.

Great age to get your son started in this life long sport. Golf can be an expensive sport , but it does not have to be. There are many low dollar Jr. sets available for the young beginner. Golfsmith, among many others on the internet have a lot of good starter sets from $69 up. Check with a local golf shop to see what size clubs they may offer. Do not start him with adult hand me downs that are cut shorter, as these are heavier and to stiff for a young beginner. He will enjoy the game and improve faster with Jr. clubs made for his size and strength. check with family members that golf and ask them to work with him in the back yard to save money on practice range fees. Keep the game fun and always stop practicing before he gets bored with the practice session, so he will be excited to do it again the next time. Practice little chipping games to a bucket or circle on the ground like a bulls eye and awrd points for the closer to the center he gets. Simply, make little games to improve skills that will help later on the course. Good luck and use this site for a lot valuable information
