  • Hi All - Deep Scapula Pain?

    Hi!

I'm new to GTO but not new to golf. I was carrying a 15 HC when I had to quit due to severe pain under the right scapula during my swing (right handed). It has been about 6 years since I last played. Currently receiving treatment from a physical therapist who is also a golfer and the treatment has made an enormous difference in the pain level and soreness in the area.

Assuming I am able to get pain free, I anticipate the possibility of playing golf again, possibly even this year. The pain felt like someone stabbing me in the back at or near the scapula, with an ice pick during the downswing.

Has any anyone out there ever had this sort of pain? The reason I ask is that I don't know what I was doing wrong to have that happen. No golf instructor, out of 6 tried, ever made a comment about a distorted swing other than I had a tendency to form a backwards "C" on some strokes and that was seen in a video learning lesson.

It would be great if I could avoid recreating that pain.

Another thought is changing my swing to a left handed swing. Has anybody ever done that and if so, how did it turn out? I was almost ambidextrous when younger so I think I could accomplish it, but don't want to waste time on it if it isn't going to work out right.

Finally, are there any instructors out there who have helped someone switch their swing side to the opposite hand?

    That's all for now,

    Ken

Re: Hi All - Deep Scapula Pain?

Based on another post I read and the physical therapist's mention of it, I'm fairly sure the problem is in the serratus anterior and related musculature under and around the scapula. My exercise trainer is starting to help me stretch the area and we'll be strengthening it after we get it stretched out.

So given that additional info, could anyone speculate on what mechanics are wrong in the swing to produce that result? I'm beginning to think I hit way too many balls at the range and wound up hurting myself.

    Any comments?

    Ken
