  • Toe hits vs. lie angle

    Hi, forumites,
I'm a new member with old questions, and a senior golfer who's a beginner. At 62 yrs old, my best round was a 95 at the end of last season. My one clubfitting session at a golf store with a young tech rep said I was basically normal (no lie angle adjustments or shaft length changes from off the shelf). But I wonder. I always seem to hit irons off the toe of the club, and my usual bad drive is a slice. Is that related more to club fitting or a correctable swing path? I'm a golf-channel addict with lots of infomercial DVDs, and a couple of sessions of real lessons, but my flaws persist. Sooo, what advice do you have? Thanks so much for all your thoughts. JimR

    Toe hits? Try longer clubs.

Bad slice? Try a heavier shafted, weaker flexed, shorter lengthed driver with more loft.

Great questions. I have had the same problems. I have had the lessons and had all my clubs fitted etc. But when I can see the marks, I still tend to hit irons off the toe. I am playing quite well, thanks to members of this site. Or, I would have given up by now. But, I have never quite resolved this hitting off the toe thing.

        Bri,

Try setting up with the ball in the heel of the club then focus on hitting out the middle in the swing.

The other thing to check is your weight. If you're setting up with your weight waaaaay out over your toes, then when you swing and fight for balance, it shoots to your heels - leaving only the toe of the club to contact the ball.

I think I got some improvement today using the suggestions given. I played best I have for some time. However, due to the weather conditions, the ball was not marking the club. Except for my lob wedge. The marks on that were dead centre. Will keep working on it to make sure.

                hi Bri
try putting talc on the face of the club. it great for showing where your striking the ball on the face. i have a small tobaco tin with some talc and a rag and i dust the face with when at the range. works great and one dusting does about ten hits. let you see the pattern of hits.
                cheers
                Bill
