  • Loss of distance

Hi new here so dont know where to start.
Last season i had a strong grip and used to hit the ball a mile but never had a score due to a poor short game and inconsistency.
This year during winter i have changed to the correct grip and have had several wins however i have lost huge distance even though im swinging better than ever. The only reason i am scoring is because of my new found short game which is leaving anything inside 40 yards stone dead or close enough to make the putt.
Last year i was around 320 off the tee now im lucky to be 250 with a balloon type shape and my wedge used to be 140 yds now barly 100
would anyone have any tips to get this distance back as im struggling on long par 4 par 5 and long par 3. Im really looking to shave shots off my handicapp but if im more than 170 from the hole for my second i have no chance of getting to the green and cant rely on the short game for 18 holes in a round of golf.

The weakened grip...why did you change to that? Sounds like all you needed was short game work. Go back to a stronger grip, keep the 320 yd drives.

Or are saying that with the shorter distance your were more accurate? If so, join the club. Find a balance between your two versions. Hit it 285 and straight...this is what 65% of the pros do. Everyone of them can bomb them when they have to (except maybe a small few) and only do so when the landing area permits the errors that comes with this length. Hitting a control drive in the fairway is what should be the ultimate goal for everyone. You find this by figuring your swing's limits and where you are most consistent. It sounds like you might have found the two limits, now tinker around and find that middle ground.

      Thanks for the reply.
Its more im hitting it with the same power i have just seemed to have changed something that has rob me of the distance the ball used to travel. i used to take a nice clean divot with 8,9 anthe wedges now i cant take any divot and my ball flight is a high balloon with more or less no roll just up in the air the straight down.

A weaker grip will do that. You have rolled the leading hand open now, and when you release and turn your trailing arm over the leading, this face angle is at a higher degree...I bet you had a hard time with leaving it out to the right too...and you are having to compensate with -- dare I say -- a flip through impact? This will kill distance too, because your face is now in front of your hands.

So, go back to a stronger grip, or if this for some reason not your desired path and you have to have a weaker grip, make sure you are fully rotating through into impact, and have a good forward lean of your shaft into impact (hard to see while swinging, but a high-speed camera can catch this, or are really good pro looking for it)

Your ball flight and impact feel will tell you if you are there...it will be a crisp and low trajectory.
