  • Overcoming Short Game Mental Block

I am sixty six years of age and gave up competitive golf years ago. I still play extremely well as long as I hit the green with my approach. If not, even by a foot, I can take up to five sometimes six to get down. I have recently been away from the game due to a knee problem and have played four rounds in the last few days. The problem has no effect whatsoever on my putting which remains as good as ever. Last four rounds played 31 31 31 and 33 putts. I have had loads of lessons and even tried hypnotherapy, all to no avail. My bunker play is satisfactory presumably because it is a full shot. I take the club away in a state of panic, my brain literally - freezes - and I lurch forward because my hands will not swing forward towards the target. Believe it or not I managed to play to 7 handicap a few years ago with this problem and often achieved good scores despite taking five shots to get down from the edge of the green several times throughout the round. I missed out by one shot on a spot in the pre tournament PRO AM held on my course prior to a European Tour event having played to one under my handicap and having taken five to get down from the edge of the green on three occasions. The strain of trying to achieve is now too much and now I merely confine myself to a stroll around the course with a golf club in my hand. From fifty yards in my performance is virtually useless.
