  • tendonitis and steel shafts

Hi all. I'm a new member and have enjoyed reading many posts.
One quick question. I've been having tendonitis in my left arm and have been told that I might get some relief by switching to graphite shafted irons. Does anyone have any experience or opinions on this advice?

    Thanks ahead of time.

I personally find graphite shafts easier on my joints. But this is just my personal findings. Hope it helps.

      Hey Joe

I have had tendonitis in left arm for over 20 years. The first thing I reccomend is an "aircast" arm band. The cheapest place I found is Wal-Mart. I have used graphite shafted irons many years and they help tremenously. However, I like the feel of steel shafts better!I found this in another forum and it works.

      http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/..._1#entry725544

I take the grip off and then insert 3/8 sonofoam (6" using a wood or steel dowel.-ACE the helpfull hardware place) I then shove 1 soda straw into another about 2" and wrap with 1/8"thick window foam(also ACE) Using dowel or old shaft I shove in as for as it go. I then insert 5/8" sonofoam until it is about 3/4 "from end of shaft. I have been regripping with "Energy" grips.but they are getting hard to find. Other grip option is Endur grip from Lamkin

Thanks for the replies. I like the idea of the inserts to reduce vibration and shock. I too like the feel of steel shafts over graphite. In addition, adding the inserts will be a lot less expensive than replacing irons that I really like, just don't like the tendinitis.

Without the inserts,I can hit about a half a small bucket or play only a few hole, With the inserts, I can hit balls all day or play 36 with no problem. I no longer use the "aircast",but recommend you use it for rest of this golfing season.

This is the only place you can still get energy grips. Get the Rogers(if you like yellow) or the Tour( one I use)

          http://www.golfsmith.com/products/18743/Lamkin/Performance_Plus_3GEN_.580_Round_Grip

Also enclosing link to Lamkin N-Dur. I have them on a set of graphite shafted irons and like them. When I can't get Energy grips any longer, I will use N-Dur Performance Plus on steel shafts

The sonofoam and window foam is dirt cheap,so you can convert for next to nothing. I am getting ready to convert some 60's Spalding Top-Flite "Birdie in the Circle"irons.

I have been looking for this model for over 40years. To my amazement I won them for $25.00 plus shipping!!!

Let me know if you have any questions.

I just spoke with my own golf instructor about this. No question steel shafts, in addition to being heavier, can be a problem with golfers with muscle issues. Switch to graphite. Much lighter and easier on you for sure.
