I've been bitten by the bug again after 8 years of only bi-monthly games or so, I used to average a sweet 85 to 90 but after 6 months back in the saddle only average 102, my short game is as I remember 32-34 putts per round and average 3 shots inside 100, 30% fairways hit 260-270yds (3W only, haven't been game for the driver yet). Hybrid/4I to 8I is a big problem, they are like hazard magnets............. left, right, fat, thin. On the driving range these clubs aren't a problem, on course, but??????. On course as well I might go out in 58 and come back in 42 or vice versa, people that know me are starting to think that I am over inflating my handicap. can anyone throw me a bone to work on my consistancy?

Re: Hey all... 100 to <90 ????????
I'll take a stab at the 8i-4i issue, that fats and thins are a result of an overactive spine angle throughout the swing...probably raising up on the takeaway and dropping back down into impact. A stable core is essential to consistency, so work on your back leg's flex staying flexed at the top of the swing. The left-rights are usually a cause of the trailing wrists trying to close the face down / or a slap release that is too early or late. You are always going to fight this issue to some degree until you take the hands out of the equation and use a full turn into impact and allow that to be the reason for the face returning to square...this way all you have to do it find the bottom of the swing with the arms and let the hands roll over naturally rather then pushing/slapping/swatting the hands through impact hoping for a square impact and more power. You will get all the power you want from your rotational acceleration and whipping effect that you get from a bottom-up attack to the ball -- legs, hips, shoulders, arms and last hands/wrists. I suspect you are: shoulders, hands, arms, hips, and your legs are used to make sure you didn't fall down.
100 yards in will take the longest time to get back to what you were used to by playing more, it's just one of those things that the number of variables to play a shot that lands close enough to 1 putt takes a magician's mentality to play just the right shot just the right way. You may get lucky a few shots, but to do it all day takes pure confidence in your ability to play the right shot for that situation. If you have a true practice facility near you that allows you to bring 20 or so balls with you to play to a mock-green with sandtraps and multi-pin placements, you can always spend a day there each week and just immerse yourself in short-game shots.Last edited by GregJWillis; 09-23-2010, 03:08 PM.

Re: Hey all... 100 to <90 ????????
Thanks Greg, I just needed to make some small adjustments, courtesy of your advice and take a flatter swing plane and 8 out of 10 iron shots are feeling crisp, I'm sure I'll bring that up a bit with practice. As for my short game and putting, unlike alot of high'cappers I seem to have good feel and am quite confident inside 100 courtesy of a large back yard, chipping net and long piece of carpet.
My goal is to get back under 90 by the end of next month, and if I can take the hazards and OB out from the fairway there's 8 to 10 shots at least.
Time to try it on course, practice today, stroke event Saturday.
Cheers, Mick.
