    Hello all

I have always wanted to play golf but never had the nerve to go ahead with it.
I have got my self a second hand full set, trolly ,shoes etc by doing a bit of wheeler dealing on ebay.
My son (14) and i went and to walton hall golf club in warrington cheshire the other day and we had a great time and cant wait to go again.
I hit a 125 round on a par 72. I know thats rubbish (We had fun though)and i know where i lost a lot of shots.
I was a bit nervous having never been on a course before. I did settle down after about 4 holes.
What i kept on doing was (I think its called topping the ball) The ball would go about 10/20 yards then the next shot would be great nearly as good as you see on the telly, Well it was to me. Then i would hit another good shot then hit 2 topped shots etc.
The story of my round was not being able to hit the ball correctly all the time. One good thing was i only lost 1 ball.
Can someone help me and tell me how to hit the ball correctlt ALL the time.
Any help would be brilliant as even though i am not very good i love the sport and cant wait to go again.
    Many thanks

Hi Keith, welcome to the site and I hope you maintain your enthusiasm for golf and enjoy the journey.

I would strongly recommend that you invest in some beginner lessons with a local PGA professional, most driving ranges have a resident pro.

As a starter you are probably topping the ball because you are trying to lift the ball into the air by scooping at it. In golf the correct method is generally opposite to what our instincts want us to do. Next time you play make sure you try to hit the ball downwards with your weight moving forwards, as if you are trying to bounce it off the turf. Imagine the ball has a nail sticking out of the back of it's equator and pointing upwards by around 30 degrees, when you strike the ball imagine you are driving the nail down into and through the ball, this will allow the loft of the club to get the ball into the air.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Hi and Thank you for the warm welcome.
As of my golf goes i have watched lots of videos etc and know what to do, the problem is doing it on the course. I do top the ball but dont seem to be able to stop. I think i am to eager and try to hit the ball to fast and hard. I am going to try and not hit the ball to hard and try and hit down on the ball all the time. Thinking about the nail in the ball sounds like a good idea i will give it ago.
          Many thanks
