  • Trajectory Too High After Driver Change

I had surgery earlier this year and lost some strength. I was really fighting to get shaft flex with an S shaft driver 8.5 degrees.

So, I changed from to an R shaft driver 10.5 degrees.

There's not much distance increase, but the trajectory ball height increase is HUGE, and on damp fairways the ball nearly plugs.

I'm also concerned about playing into the wind. Plus, the overall distance could be longer with a reduced landing angle.

I love the feel of the R shaft, and on dry fairways the ball bounces forward okay, similar to what you see on blimp shots of PGA events.

I tee the ball very low, using a 2.25 inch tee. The driver head just skims the grass. The ball, with a shoulder wide stance, is just inside my front foot.

I don't want to leave the ProV1 ball, as I have several dozen unopened and have used them for years.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

Teeing the ball so low will be generating fairly high spin that balloons the ball high so that it drops down quickly and steeply as spin reduces. Try teeing the ball higher and striking it higher on the clubface on the upswing. This will give a fairly high launch angle but with lower spin, the ball should now produce more of a rainbow flight rather than an upturned hokey stick. This will give more carry and a shallower angle of landing that will roll out further.

Experiment with tee height and try some impact tape on the face of your driver so you can see where you are contacting the ball. Hopefully this will improve things, the next step would be something like a regular shaft with less loft and a higher tee.

      hi
with the new big headed drivers you need a 3 or 4 inch tee. the diffrence in playing the ball of a 4" tee to a 2" tee is hard to explane without doing it. and i was shocked when i changed to the 4 inch tees and started hitting longer. as Brain said! you have less backspin when tee'd higher and the ball flys a bit lower but stays in the air a bit longer too.
if you set you driver just touching the tops of the grass and look where the middle of the ball is will give you a good idea of how high you need your tee. the middle of the ball should line up the the top of the driver and the new big headed drivers face can be 3" from top to bottom.
give it a try with a 4" tee and you will see a diffrence in the ball flight.
      Cheers
      Bill
