what is the difference in a "mid tip" or "soft tip" shaft?

Tip firmness.
soft is softer than mid, mid is softer than firm.
It has to do with tweaking spin numbers - a shaft that's firmer in the tip than your current shaft will lower spin.
The issue is the lack of standards - what's FIRM to company A may be no different than the MID in company B, and company C colour codes for firmness.
Clubfitting and clubmaking have come a long way from just measuring butt CPM for flex and the idea that a shaft plays stiff or soft to flex. -

If you're ballooning the shot (it suddenly shoots up partway through it's flight) or if it's dropping straight out of the sky (looks like it hit a wall) then you're likely over-spinning the ball and could use something with a stiffer tip.
How you really find out is getting on a launch monitor with your current gamer and getting numbers. Then compare those numbers to other drivers.Comment
