  • Gotta strong grip w/ lottsa hooks! Help!

    Hi all,

This is my first post so bear with me. I am not new to the game but I just don't play enough to garner any kind of consistency. Lately, I thought I'd make an effort to get out to the practice tee and see what I can "work out". The grip that feels most comfortable to me when I pick up the club is super strong and when the club is straight out in front of me it's extremely shut. By the time I square the face at address my hands/shaft are quite a bit in front of the ball. Needless to say, with with typical ball placement I'm hooking it quite a bit. I've tried weakening the grip, but it feels so unnatural and off balance in the backswing. Any ideas?

With the club out in front of you, grip it so the toe of the club is straight up. Neutral grip...palms facing each other, fingers lightly under the grip.

With the club still out in front like a baseball swing, rotate back with the torso, chest and stay balanced in the legs. Let the leading hand roll over the trailing. Don't fight anything. Don't force anything. Let the arms and hands work together.

Now swing the club through impact and beyond repeating this "rolling over" with the arms where now the trailing will roll over the leading.

Do this back and forth about 10 times where you begin to feel the whipping feeling of the hands and arms working together.

Setup like a normal golf swing now simply bending at the hips and knees, and do this same thing...back and forth.

Does this feel a little more natural in the grip?

Thank you Greg. I will let you know. I'm willing to try any suggestion to improve. I'm concerned though that I may "re-grip". I have attempted a neutral grip in the past and have caught myself "re-gripping" almost subconsciously. But by-golly I'm willing to tough it out on a few visits to the range in an attempt to get used to it. People do it, so it can't be all that foreign right!?

Your current comfort in the hands are a manifestation of countering something that is wrong in your swing. The hands are the easiest thing to change and get immediate results.

You will never improve past your current level. You have to get back to basics and start from a good swing, then let the rest fall into place. Improvement will then have room.
