  • Hitting my driver low!! Help!!

    Hi,

    I need your help.

I hit my irons really well and some distance for example my 5 Iron around 185 yards and my 5 wood around 200+

But my problem is my driver I hit it really low around 220 yards after it has skipped along. I have a Ping G15 10.5 degree. The problem is I cannot get it in the air. I really dont want to change my swing as I haven't changed it since I started playing 10 years ago.

Would you suggest I get a driver with a higher degree loft?
Use a 3 wood off the tee?
    or change my swing?

I am currently off 14 handicap and I know this problem is stoppping me from getting lower as all the other part of my game is good.

Thank you in advance for any advise.

    Welcome

    Welcome to the forum.

If you don't want to make any changes to your golf swing than I would advise a couple of things. Try moving the ball a little bit further toward the front of the stance and adjusting your tee height slightly. Don't make any too major changes, just slight adjustments and take note of the results. This is something to do at the golf driving range.

As you mentioned you could try a higher degree loft of driver perhaps a 11 to 12 degree. For most golfers I would normally say 10.5 degree is enough to get sufficient height but not everyone is the same. I know a lot of golfers that only tee off with 3 wood as they find it easier to hit and don't notice a great deal of difference in distance. Again experiment and take note of the results!

    Hope this helps.

Re: Hitting my driver low!! Help!!

First things first, let's understand that the driver is a unique club from all the others in your bag. It is the lightest, longest and really the only club to be hit on the upswing(maybe putter would be an exception for some)
Now knowing this, we must adapt to hitting driver as follows:
Tee the ball so 1/3rd of the top part of the ball is higher than the driver head. Next, set up making sure your right shoulder is lower than the left. Finally, when you swing it, make sure you complete your backswing and into impact make sure you hit UP on the ball while staying BEHIND it at impact. This will impart positive spin.
I suspect you are doing mostly the opposite of what I have just listed so no wonder you are having problems.
Try these things first then I will explain the rationale behind each tip if you will let me know how this works.

It is hard to tell if you are swinging up too much as it is which is causing you to catch it very low on the clubface, or if you are hitting down on it so much that you are de-lofting the face.

Do you take divots with your driver, or do you barely brush the grass at all?
