  • Just Joined - Have a Golf Rules Question

Cannot find the answer to this one. Would appreciate any clarification. Last week at the Honda Classic in South FL, the wind was blowing very hard the first round and Ernie Els had a 10-footer turn into a 20-footer, when his ball blew away on a green, while he was preparing to address the putt. Could he have maintained the original position, if he had never picked-up his ball-marker? Basically, as long as he does not hit the coin with the putter during the stroke, is there any rule to preclude him from having left the coin there the whole time, in the event of a gust of wind causing him the problem that it did...?

    Thanks...

I stand to be corrected here but I believe the ball is in play as soon as it is replaced on the putting surface. Leaving the marker in place does not prevent the ball from being in play once it has been replaced.

      Just for extra information.

The other answer is correct, the ball is in play once replaced (20-4), there is actually a decision (20-4.1) which covers this:

20-4/1 Ball Replaced on Putting Green But Ball-Marker Not Removed; Ball Then Moves

      Q. A player replaces his ball on the putting green but does not remove his ball-marker. Subsequently the wind moves his ball to a new position. What is the ruling?

      A. Under Rule 20-4, a ball is in play when it is replaced, whether or not the object used to mark its position has been removed. Consequently the ball must be played from the new position — see Decision 18-1/12.

And for completeness. If the ball had been moved by an "outside agency" then it could have been replaced, wind, unfortunately for Ernie, as per 18-1, does not count, hence he had to accept the 20 footer.
