  • hooking new driver!!

    hi all!
ive just bought a new driver and have started hooking 90% of my shots. ive gone from a cheap dunlop, 13 deg, L flex to a ping rapture, 9 deg, stiff shaft. i was hitting 95% of my drives straight with a slight draw with the dunlop but wasnt getting the distance i knew i was capable of. im just wondering if anyone can help me with this, comments would be great. also the new driver is about two inches longer in length if that has anything to do with it? many thanks, John

    Re: hooking new driver!!

Why did you change to a Driver with less loft and a stiffer shaft? Most handicap golfers do not generate enough swing speed for a driver like this, did you get it checked out in a fitting session, the club may have the wrong characteristics for your swing.

i wasnt sure whether my swing speed would have suited the stiff shaft. ive been looking into it all day and decided to sell that club and bought another rapture, this time with 10.5 degree loft and a regular shaft. fingers crossed the results are better. ive never had my swing speed measured or anything, do you think maybe i should? i only started golf properly 6months ago and have already gone to a 17 handicap which i think is pretty good, ive got the bug now!!

When buying a club its a good idea to try it out somewhere that has a swing monitor that measures your swing speed and launch angle. Most golfers get better distance with more loft and a shaft that suits their swing speed.

          BrianW's advice is good.
Were you pull hooking or just hooking? In other words did the ball start of to the right and curl rapidly to the left (a hook), assuming you are rt hand. Or did it pull left and carry on left?
If it was the latter which I suspect it was then a stiff shaft is only going to make it worse. Your clubhead is travelling outside to in. Having a more flexible shaft allows the head to lag open and contribute a bit to clubhead speed.
To get a more inside to outswing path may be achieved by trying to get more "behind" the ball.
You need to work on getting the hips to lead the downswing rather than the shoulders, and the hands to release at impact rather than tighten/stiffen up.
          Good luck!
