  • New Member - First time issue...

    Hi everyone!

I began playing golf way back in the 80s as a teenager. I played what was known at the time as speed golf. Go onto a closed course that is member only late in the day and play as fast as possible before you are chased off. :-)

When I recently got back into golf I found that I have an incurable slice with the driver. I have tried everything. I am told I have great golf form - my head doesn't move, I am balanced, my left arm is straight, I release well - but I always hit the ball right. And this isn't an easy slice - nope! The ball goes straight as an arrow for about 50 to 75 yards and then it goes straight right.

I have found that as I go from the driver 1, to 3, to 5 - it gradually gets better. But not cured.

Does anyone have a set of pointers or things to look at to try to correct a slice? I never hit left or straight with a driver - ever. Always right.

Thanks for your time (and patience),

    -Nate

sounds to me like you might need to try a stronger grip. the reason it is better with you woods and irons is because the more loft you get and the steeper the swing path, the less your slice gets. how many knucles on your left hand can you see when you are setup? a strong grip you should see about about 3 knucels. you face is open at impact that is why you are slicing. the ballistics of the ball goes strait becuae you have a good swing path, but then the side spin on the ball kick in after 50yds or so and it starts to go right.

another problem people seem to do when they are told to close the face a bit at setup, is setup the club then rotate the club shut. make sure you do not do that, you should rotate the face a bit closed, then grip it. proper grip is also key, make sure your "Vs" are lined up as well. try to maybe keep you left arm more conected to your body...hold a glive in your armpit and make a swing without having the glove fall to help you stay more connected. maybe try to relax your hands/arms more, being too tight might prevent you from releasing properly too.

this drill is also geniuos form our very own greg

i think every amateur should see this website, it would probly cure a ton of accuracy and power problems on its own.

just some of the things i can think of that would help fix a slice, hope one of them helps.

        Thanks so much!

I normally see 3 knuckles. But tonight I will make sure. I am going to give that website a try as well.

Hi everyone, I love watching golf on the tv and playing golf in
sunny old England however I have played with my dad for about 4 years now and we both have a similar game. Hit the ball pretty straight but short and low whether it be irons or driver. Now my friend next door is playing with us and after only playing for 3 months he hits the ball high and long wish I could do that. Problem is I have a shallow swing and am frightened of losing control with a full swing and feel ackward when doing a full swing. I suppose I have got into a routine of steady golf that 9 times out of 10 beats my day however my game is not developing. Wondered if you guy had any tips.

What your are describing is not what is commonly describe as a slice. That is you are not swinging - outside in with an open clubface. What you are describing is a pushed ball hit with an open club face. This can be caused by improper alignment. In your case, I think you foot line is too far right and your ball position is too far back. So, the club is on an inside to outside path relative to the target line and the club face is open because the ball is too far back in your stance and has not had a chance to close. If this is the case, simply square your foot line to the target line, and put the ball a bit more foward in your stance. To check your foot line, put a club at your heels, not your toes because when you flange out your toes, it can appear as if you are open. Hope this helps

does anyone want to back me up on this? and in to outswing is what causes a push. read this link to understand that 9 rules of ball flight

an in to out swinf with open face is what causes a sever push slice goes about 90* to the target line.
