I used to block badly because id start the downswing by pulling down with my arms/hands without shifting/turning my lower body. Id therefore get my arms stuck way behind me and the club would be wide open at impact. You then start coming OTT to square the face and one problem turns into another one
Key that worked for me was to learn that the lower body starts the dowsnwing and pulls your arms down behind it. This then has the effect of squaring the clubface at the last minute as your hands pull the clubhead through
