  • New Member needs Driver Assistance

I'm a new member who has been playing golf for nearly 15 years but I have never been very consistent with my driver. I need to start fresh on building my swing from scratch because I never learned how to hit a driver and relied on a combination of hand-eye coordination and athletic skill.

My question... can someone tell me the simple, basic fundamentals of a driver swing? I am going back to the drawing board and learning all over so anything will help.

    Thanks in advance.

    Stukel,
My driver is probably the best club in my bag so for what its worth here goes.
    1. Tee it exactly one club head height above the clubface
    2. Grip with two knuckles of left hand towards right shoulder.
3 This grip should give you the "v" pointing to right shoulder.
4.Imagine bodyweight is on your insteps and laces.
5.knees bent with your posterior "sitting on a stool"
    6. Ball off left heel.
    7. stance slightly narrower than shoulder width.
    8. Head behind ball at adress.
    9. Pick up your tee and walk 300yds in straight line!!

    Cheers
    Robert

If you set the ball in the middle of your stance or in the same area as your other clubs it will be WAYYYYY too far back.

Experiment by trying the ball off your left toe or even further forward than that. Take the club back to the middle as normal. And swing. The ball must be farther forward especially if your ball is tee'd 2-3 inches off the ground. I use one of those yellow brush tees so the ball is always the same height when I set up. The more variables you take out of your set up the better.

Personally (and everyone is different) slice I started positioning the ball 4 inches forward of my left foot, I've been hitting the ball farther higher and straighter than ever.

When I used to set the ball off my instep I'd have a terrible slice and the ball would never go any higher than a 15* launch angle.

Sometimes I try moving the ball back a bit just to "convince" myself I'm fooling myself. Back comes the slice, back comes the sky'd balls, back come all the faults I always had.

If only I had known this all along. You may not believe this simple set up can change your game, but it can. No matter what anyone says about not needing to hit a driver to get low scores, a 220-250 yard drive off the tee never hurts. And it's fun to watch!

        Hi Scott,

First of all, regardless of what your golfing buddies might tell you, you make exactly the same swing for all your clubs, the only difference being your ball position and slightly more upright posture due to it being a longer club.
I hit all of my clubs with exactly the same speed.
One of the greatest golfing mis-conceptions is you must smack the ass off the ball with the driver.
There is no such thing as " driver swing ".
Try to concentrate on keeping a even tempo when using your driver, this will help maintian good rythm throughout the swing and lead to more consistant , straighter shots.

        good luck scott

Re: New Member needs Driver Assistance

Thanks for the responses. It is a different world for me setting up with the ball forward in my stance. When I first started playing I had the ball inside of my left foot but I had a severe slice problem that I could not get rid of. Therefore I found a comfortable swing with the ball way back in my stance and my hands moved back as well. I do have a question for Robert, when you say "2 knuckles toward the right shoulder", what exactly does that mean? I have worked on the range on the new driver setup and have had mixed results. Any additional clarification or tips would be appreciated.

          Thanks,

          -Scott
