    Hello Members and Pros,
I am not much for online conversation but if it happens to be with golfers that desire to help others with the game they love,...well then how can a guy go wrong. They call me SteakDaddy. I have been lets say under the weather for the last two years and have only played 2 full rounds of golf. My physical condition is now to the point where I am finally able to begin to play again although I will still need about 2 months of taking it slower than I would prefer. I am a 12-14 handicap with a lifelong problem with my iron play. I will be looking for any advise I can get on how to not only be more consistent, but also much longer. I am big and strong and 41 yrs old at 6' 3" & 250. I have always been very athletic and picked up on the short game fairly well as a beginner 10 years ago. My driver though inconsistant at times is usually fairly easy to correct most of time. I play with an older set of Pings and for example my PW is a consistent 90 yds and my 5 iron is about 160-165. Yes, I do have a slower swing but only because I can be more accurate if I use a club or even 2 longer and take that very smooth stroke plus I have learned no matter how hard I swing the distance is just not there. Ok, so here is MY first plea for help. I definately am fired up about playing golf again. I am aware that after the layoff I have had that this is a good time to start over in the areas I have always struggled with. What do you guys feel that my plan should be in order to 1. yes, correct my weaknesses, but also 2. to come back in such a way that I am able to get the most progress in the shortest time and reach my goal of shooting in the 70s. Thank You ! Didnt mean to be so long but background is important for proper help.
Please reply and Thanks again randysteakley@midsouth.rr.com SteakDaddy

    Hi Steakdaddy.
I would deffinately begin by going to see a golf pro . After such a lay off you may find it easier to cure your old swing faults.

Now is an ideal time to work on your short game. It doesnt take the effort of a full swing and i am a firm believer that if you want to seriously lower your handicap then this is the area that will require the most work.
work on your chipping putting and short swing pitches for now.

      Hey Silas,

I really appreciate the advice. You are right. But, MAN! it is so much more fun to play the course and especially when you miss that commrodiery (mispelled Im sure) from your buddies. Reality is that until I either practice or get with a pro I will start off wrong. I am no way limber and can only swing at % of what I would swing at normally. So thanks, I guess reassuring is what I need more than anything right now. I am going to go ahead and place you in here as a BUD if thats OK. Let me know if there is anything I may be able to help you with. I noticed you are from the UK. If you only have a question about what it is like over here in the US that will be fine too. In fact I would find it quite interesting too get others opinions sometimes. Talk with you again soon BUD. SteakDaddy

          welcome to GTO
youre quickest way back i think is to go see a pro to straighten a few things out and practise your short game as often as possible!

            hi Steakdaddy
welcome to gto. i agree the best way is to see a pro first but one other way it to tape your swing and check it using something like v1, or post it on her and get some of the experts to give there views, good your back swinging again and hope you get in the grove soon.

Bill, I appreciate the response. It is cool to be able to speak with you guys who have an idea where I am coming from and be able to get some good advice. I have a 13 yr old daughter that I am placing in a Private school this year where they offer golf. She is very athletic. She is a great softball player. This was her first year to play since she was 6 and she not only made All-Star but also lead her team by playing shortstop and catcher to a 3rd place finish in the World Series for her age group. She has not only amazed the coaches of her league with her incrediable improvement in only about 3 months but I am pretty tough to impress and she even blew me away. Great hands and she not only batted cleanup but hit 9 homeruns while no one else had more than 2. As you can tell I am a proud Pop. She is not looking forward to the golf move though. She has only tried to play on 2 different occasions and as you know golf can not only be humbling but also humiliating when others watch. I am anxious to see just what happens when she gets down the basics of the golf swing. Maybe Dad will have some free lessons. If anyone knows of any sites that are good for beginners I would be interested. I have a few already, but I have only had 1 lesson myself and my interest for her is to make sure that if I give her some things to work on that will not in any way lead her towards any bad habits. Well Bill, I only intended to quick reply a thanks, but those kids will make you pull out the pictures and keep you longer than you planned. Talk to you later.....Thanks again SteakDaddy

                Hi Steakdaddy,

Welcome to GTO, to answer your last reply, you are on the best begginers site.

As for you, starting with a pro is the best advice for mechanics but I think your maybe a little deeper than that.

I would suggest you are a controller of the golf ball, therefore a slower swing with a mechanical controlling mind, you like to know where you are in the swing, therefore a visual learner (like me)...................try to see a pro that videos your swing and helps you by showing you your own swing.

Not all low h/cappers are long with irons or off the tee, your yardages are fine, for a hole that is 350yds, you only need to hit 185 of the tee to leave 165...a 5 iron for you, a longer tee shot leaves a wedge...............food for thought.

When you have a few lessons and start to get back on the course I am sure you will be fine, just relax and enjoy your company..............to many people read to much into this game, as someone once said "It is not a game of perfect".

                Good luck

                Ian.

P>S I suspect your daughter will need lessons also, she will not listen to you......trust me.

great to hear about your daughter, 13 great age to play golf but i would make sure she starts right and that would be with a pro, he or she will install all the right things at a age when its importent to get the basics right, she will take so much in at that age when 17/18 you will see the rewards. i tried to teach my daughter but all she wanted to do was hit the ball, she listened to the pro not me, ian's right about that. lol.
                  best of luck

                    Re: Help Wanted

                    Hi Ian,
You have me pegged as far as my approach and and mind set are for this game. (Pretty remarkable) I do feel as though a slower swing does help me keep my swing in the slot much better and also I able to feel where I may have lost my swing. I have always been able to rely on my hands to take over enough in those last few inches or so before impact. Being as big as I am the slow swing does not just totally kill my yardage especially on the tee box. My biggest problem has always been that I am not as good of a ball striker as I wish I were. When I first learned the game I played for the longest thinking the golf swing was more of a sweeping swing (like driver) than a descending blow and therefore I have always struggled especially 6 iron down (to 2 iron) to ever have a consistant round where I felt I really struck my irons well. If you or anyone else have any advice for a drill or something else I may be able to do to become the ball striker I have soooo longed to be, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I will GREATLY appreciate any advice I can recieve on this subject. As crazy as it sounds...I am much more able to hit my short irons in this manner but my longer irons I just cant bring my self to make that same swing.
                    Thanks Ian.
No longer than I have been on this site I can already tell that you are a very helpful and wise. I hope you dont mind but I would like to perhaps speak with you again sometime about a few other views and opinions you may have on other subjects.

Steak Daddy...welcome....Lots of good ideas. If you want to do a lot of it yourself, think balance, rhythmn, good preset routines, and the short game always needs work......Take time to relax and still try to enjoy it. Don't put to much pressure on yourself and it will return...I left for 7 years and didn't play at all, now back to a 5 handicap.....
                        best wishes...have a good one...rich

                          Re: Help Wanted

Hey Speedy, I appreciate the support. I got to play Saturday and the temp was about 98. I finished 14 holes and that was kinda frustrating but I only bogeyed two holes and even birdied one. Not bad for a 14 hdcp with a two year layoff. I made sure stretched really well and just tried to keep everything slow and smooth. At first I was opening my hips and pulling left, but I was able to quickly fix it and until my last 2 holes I kept things together. I had to scramble to save par on my 3 last holes but I finally had to succomb to t heat. It took me a while to recover from that much action in one day but today I feel stronger and am looking forward playing tommorrow. I am still trying to find some good advice for becoming a better ball striker, especially with my irons. Speedy since I am still fairly new right now let me ask you a question. I guess the place to post a request for help like this to post it on the "Golf Swing Instruction" area?? If not maybe you can help me here.
