    hi wayne
    welcome to GTO
there are so many reasons why you could be slicing the ball!
is it with all your clubs or just driver?

Hard to say without seeing your swing but there are a couple of things you can check pretty easily.

      1. Your grip: If it is too weak you will slice. Try rotating your left hand so more knukles are showing.

      2. Out to in swing path: This means you will cut across the ball imparting sidespin on to it. This is harder to get rid of but ther are a few good drills you can find about the place to help you get rid of it.

          Hi Wayne,

There are lots of reasons for this. I would suggest that as a beginner, you should get a few lessons. This will give you good basics and also an opportunity to find out what you might be doing to encourage that slice. Trying to find out without the help of an instructor will only confuse you more and probably bring more problems that you dont want.

The biggest favor I did for my self was a lesson. The instructor changed a few things and to practice on the course as well as the range.

              Q:
Why do I slice to the right?
              A:
Because if you sliced to the left, it would be a hook

Just kidding - been there, know how it feels. Getting a lesson early on to straighten out your swing is probably the best advice you'll get.

Hi every body I would like to say thank you to all those you offered me advise, I had my first lesson last wednesday. The instructor asked me to take about 6 to 8 shots with a 7 iron. He then began to construct my swing. well! I can't tell you the change in how the balls leave the club head. they nearly always go straight. he told me to go to a range near me only get 25 balls and set up the grip then the stance as I was shown every time, and don't try to take short cuts at this stage. I can't wait for the next lession. I'm just off for a round with friends and to put in to practice all I have learnt. I also made a video of my swing before my lession and I will make another after my first lession I need to see the difference in the swing.
I think that's enough of my ranting for a bit I will keep you all posted as to how I do.
                  cheers all

                    nice one!
get the fundamentals ingrained correctly at this stage and you're well on your way to a solid game.
also always place clubs down at the range to help with alignment till you get use to lining up properly and then just every now and then just as a check

Hi everyone I have just come back from my second lession, this was all about the swing and body-line my god it's hard. and then to put it all together, and hitting the ball as well not easy is it. But it's that buzz you get when you manage to put it all togther, and the ball sails off in to the distances. that's a good feeling. I went for around of golf last sunday, I could hit the balls quite well on the range. But when I got on the course I was really really BAD, and I don't know why. maybe it's because 3 or more people are watching you, what do you Guys think , are you nevous then other poeple are watching. please let me know
                      cheers to all

Re: Why do I always slice to the Right

                        Hi
I can associate with your story: I swung to the right, I took a lesson, and finally the euphoria of hitting straight on the range was replaced with disappointment to find myself unable to reproduce this on the course. And all this was only this weekend (September 16)!
For me, I think it has a lot to do with the difficulty that change brings: I had to change my grip from a weak one to a stronger one; and I was taught how to swing through the ball, from a half swing that moves from an open to closed club head. But when I tried all this on the tee I was hopeless! I was 'trying too hard' to focus on what I'd been taught and forgot about everything else. I liken it to beginning all over again. But - and this is the important thing - it's better to take these steps now, I think, even if it means my game is temporarily terrible - rather than let my bad habits ruin my game later on, or stop me from progressing.

So, I've lost a little confidence for now, and those people behind me who 'seem' to stare are a little more intimidating than they might have been - but I know this won't last for long, just as it disappeared the first time I played.

I wish you the best with your game - do let us know how you get on.

Re: Why do I always slice to the Right

Hi Vongreenback; thank you for replying to my last ranting of frustrations, it is interesting to find someone who has the same problems as my self, I too played on Sunday, I was playing in a four ball, because at the moment I hate them with a passion, it puts so much pressure on you to at least hit a half descent shot. I didn't start too good, and I was told we had to speed up, it was then I remembered what I had seen on my Ernie Els DVD. All about Rhythm, I know how to grip the club, I know how to stand and setup for the shot. But I take too long to hit the ball, as if I am afraid of missing or mucking it up. so the (123 GO) that Ernie Els show on his DVD is this setup to hit the ball count 1 and pull the club back with your arms straight 2 crook your wrist and pull your hips and shoulders around into the full back wing position 3 the downward and follow swing through. And if you count 1 and 2 and 3 GO. This works really well because you think about the timing of the shot and not if the wrist are OK or the feet the right width apart. All I can say is it work for me I started to hit LONG STRAIGHT shot off the tee. And some good approach shots. I was the first to the green for a 457 yard hole. How good did that make me feel after the stick I was getting I can't begin to tell you.
I have another lesson on Tuesday 19. I want him show me how to hit tee shots and repeat it over and over again

Good luck with your lesson tomorrow. I too have some lessons planned - and of course much practise, too. So, would you recommend that Els DVD or any others, come to that? I watch Golf Channel on Sky for tips and tuition - is there anything else you would recommend? I expect there is a thread around here somewhere which will list some useful references.

I think part of the problem for me is that I was being asked to play a shorter but controlled swing in my lessons - this was fine in the range, but when I went to tee off I had to hit it harder, so the control went wobbly. The good news is I know what's going wrong and what I need to do to improve. Oh well - it's frustrating but I'm absolutely loving it.

Vongreenback Hi the other DVD I've found useful is Daivd Leadbetter's Greatest Tips, as he trains some of the worlds best players it worth watching him, he has some good pre-shot routines you can get his suff on the internet.
I was up the Range today, my iron shots are coming on fine I was hitting 3 irons to Pitch wedge all going somewhere about where they were suppost to go . But I still can't get my driver straight, I have tried tweeking bit here and there but nothing works. I think it's to do with the length of the club to me it seem too long to pull back and then come round and hit the ball in a straight line. I hope the club pro can staighten me out tomorow,
I hope the other DVD helps you
