Sounds like you're on a decent path into the ball, but that the clubface is still hanging open at impact. (If you were cutting across the ball, like an exagerated sidespin shot in tennis, then I'd expect the ball to slice or curve wickedly.) Sounds like your wrists are still hinged a little, and you need to close up the clubface.
I've heard the "releasing" of the wrist described like the motion of the hands when tossing a frisbee. Don't snap them quite like that, but make sure that they are turning to close the clubface.
That's my amateurish take on it. Good luck!

Re: please help
Hi Robbo,
Reading your post, and thinking about your problem, I would suggest you are probably coming into the ball hands first from the top of the backswing. Ideally, the first move on the downswing is a bump of the left hip, and a drop of the left shoulder. If you get this sequence correct, it follows that the hands attack the ball on a downward movement which makes the club come into the ball square and on the correct plane. The hands should always be in front of the clubhead. If not, the end result will be that the clubface will open and the ball will go in the direction that you spoke about, to the right. Hope this helps.
Robert
