  • Weight Shift

    Hi All,

I'm new to this site and hope someone can help me.
I have lost my swing. I'm shanking just about every club in my bag.
I just had a lesson and found out I'm releasing my hand too soon.
That's just the start of things. Next, I'm not clearing my hips and I tried to
shift my weight but All I get is hitting the the larger ball rather than the golfball. I'm all messed up.
    Please help,
    Colorado

Most of us have been there so stay in the game.

I struggled with an improper weight shift and thru lessons and repitition I worked it out. I would slow my swing down and work on what it is you want to change - preferably not all of them at the same time.

I was hitting the big ball before the little ball and it was thought that I was doing this because of my poor weigh shift. I worked out the weight shift and the problem of the big ball before the little ball didin't relent. (This problem was with my woods).

I booght Ben Hogan's Five Lessons and it did more good then a summer of lessons. The problem with my swing was it was too steep - I followed the beautiful illustrations in the book, changed the plane of my swing, and my backswing, and I finally began to make some solid contact, and I was clearing my hips BY VIRTUE OF MY BAKSWING and setup - it all came together, and I found meaning in life, once again.

Get the book - you need it and it is inexpensive.

    Good luck.

It sounds like you have a basic understanding of the swing. However, I don't think anyone has explained the most basic of all. The Impact Position. Start with a good fundamental chip. (stance slightly open, weight left, firm, slightly cocked wrists) From a good set up, all you need to do is think putting stroke and the ball will just pop up and release. Now continue on with that technique. Make slighly larger swings until you're "chipping" the ball 40- 50 yards. You should notice that your best results are when your weight stays left and your wrists are firm.(hands ahead of clubhead at impact) What your feeling on the good straight shots is your body squaring the clubface. I'm sure you've heard the pros say that from time to time. Just use a 7 or 8 iron and as your swing gets longer widen and straighten your stance.
The reason you are so frustrated is because your mind won't let your hips clear if you're casting the club(unless you don't mind a 100 yard pull hook) So, your thinking is correct you just have not learned how to squre the clubface with your body. Have you seen that drill where David Leadbetter cocks his wrists and then swings. That is what you're working toward with the chipping. Remember, once you get your wrists properly cocked; hold them firm, clear your hips and let your arms drop down the slot. Once you move to a full swing don't worry about fades or draws for a while. Just feel that beautiful, solid impact. Work on that for a couple of weeks. An added benefit is going to your next lesson with something concrete to discuss. Swing thought: hit the ball with the butt end of the club. Just don't get too steep.

        Hey

Sounds to me their could be a bit of a sway with the hips on the backswing. I've battled the same problem at times and got it fixed from the input on here...

On the backswing try and keep the weight on the inside of your right foot (THAT SHOULD PREVENT A SWAY). Very good input I got from Brian W.

KEEP THE RIGHT KNEE FLEXED (VERY IMPORTANT AND SO OFTEN OVER LOOKED)!!!

I haven't the ball any better without these two keys.
