  • Slices, please help

im fairly new to golf, have only been at it about 1/2 a year on-off due to the winter. i can hit 7-sw perfectly fine, my chipping is great. but i generally slice more than 1/2 of my shots using the other clubs, especially when using woods, and the high irons (3 & 4). can anyone give me a few tips how to correct this problem. and try to keep the explanations simple,

    cheers

1st, there are different kinds of slices....

    Does you ball:

    1) Start LEFT of your intended target and then curve RIGHT
    2) Start AT your intended target and then curve RIGHT
    3) Start RIGHT of your intended target and then continue to curve RIGHT

Also, how hard is the curve? Is it very sharp or gradual.

Also, what do your 7-SW shots look like based on the 1-3 above?

These answers will help us help you!

      it would be point 2:
      2) Start AT your intended target and then curve RIGHT

generally the shot will be quite straight, tthen curve of quite fast, its rare for there to be limited movement. so generally all will curve strongly.

my 7-sw shot are usually very straight, with decent distance, though they can be quite similar distances

Well, good news is that your swing path is OK. But you are not squaring the clubface. As the loft of your club decreases, the more sidespin will be put on the ball. So an open club face (when the lines on your club face point to the RIGHT of your target at impact) with your driver will have a much more dramatic curve to the right than it would with a 9 iron.

The initial solve - Proper Grip - Proper Setup - Square the face at impact

        1) Proper Grip - Should be in the fingers of both hands. NOT IN THE PALMS. The V's formed by the index finger and thumb ON BOTH HANDS should point to the right of your chin. That would be a stronger grip. You can point those V's further and further to the right to strengthen your grip. Stronger grip will help you square the clubface at impact.

        2) Proper Setup - DON'T aim left to compensate. That is the worst thing you can do. Make sure everything is square to your target. Your shoulders, hips and knees should all be parallel to your target line. A little closed might even be OK for you (closed meaning pointing a bit RIGHT of parallel).

        3) Square the face at impact - Practice some slow swings and watch the clubface. You will notice right away what you have to do in order to have it square at impact. Your right forearm will start to roll over your left forearm as you get closer to impact. Keep your wrists and arms loose. If you get tense, esp. with your grip pressure, you will leave the clubface OPEN.

There is a TON of great info on this site. Check out the golf lessons section on the top menu bar.

You will also see a lot of posts from GregJWillis...great resource. Check out the right hand drill on his site. This will really help you get square at impact the right way!
