  • Golf with a bad back

    Hallo Golf forum.
I Played Golf when I was younger, I have a great passion for the sport. But un fortunately when I got to 16 along came Beer And Girls Ha-ha. So instead of going to the golf club on Friday and coming back home sometime on Sunday after play 8 hours each day. I would do the same thing for nearly 2 months in the summer. I instead went to the pub (I AM Irish).
Unfortunately Last week I had to have an operation on my back in Bangkok. The operation went very well. This does mean I can no longer do some of my other sports. So I have bought a set of golf clubs and I am ready to restart my golf career. It’s perfect timing I’m now 31 years I am about to get married.
So my Question to this Forum is the doctor says I can’t play for 3 months. I say, I can Practice putting and chipping for next 1-2 months. Then full swing month 3. My girlfriend says no way so can anybody tell me some good back stories that I can pass on and then I can play golf sooner. Thanks Phil

Re: Golf with a bad back

I can't give you what you ask for.

I can, however, say that I've read time and again (and even experienced it once or twice myself) where those that follow the healing/rehab schedule often come out the other side as capable as ever of doing what they were before. Those that try to shortcut usually get to go back to what they were doing faster, but in a lesser capacity.

So I guess the question I'd ask is, do you want to do as well as you can, or do you want to get back at it as fast as you can?

      i agree with lowpost!
dont be in rush to get playing again, give your back its best chance of a full recovery.
in the big scheme of things 3 months isnt a long time

With the winter we're having in Canada, I may have to disagree!

Re: Golf with a bad back

          hi
i had damage to my spine and had to give up golf for a few years. when i started to be able to walk more and get about i asked the doc of i could go golfing again, he was not to keen and said if i feel any back pain stop right away. i would say the same to you if you feel any pain at all then stop and give it a rest for the day.
i fond that when i did try and play when i hit a full shot i got some back pain and i went from hitting a draw back to playing a fade with a very open stance, it seemed that standing open did not put such a strain on my lower back and i could play 18 holes without pain. i am still wary of any pain in my back but can play and a few years ago i thought that would never happen again.
take it slow and build up slowly. don't try and do to much to soon, and any pain then stop.
          best of luck.
