  • Group of lessons or a new club?

A friend is buying you a birthday gift. Would you prefer a group of lessons with a Pro or a new golf club?

Provided it's with my current instructor, lessons. Actually, if it's a group of them, lessons - as long as the instructor is good.

My regular partner advised me to get a stiffer shaft in my driver as he could see the bend in the shaft in the swing and thought the club was to "whippy".

Had a chat with the pro and he put me on the "speedo".
My Callaway Steelhead 3 wood, firm flex, was 90mph.
A Callaway Big Bertha driver, firm flex, was 90mph.
My Nike driver, regular flex, was 95mph.
Maybe we should learn how to use the equipment we've got properly instead of running out and buying the latest Fantazmagorical technology!

Yeah, but with you're club you may have been more relaxed so you swung faster, and you should swing faster with a driver than a 3w.

For the average golfer, you should be generating more speed with a whippier shaft.

Of course you generate more clubhead speed with the regular shaft compared to the firm flex. You create more lag and therefore you release an extra amount of power at impact.

It might surprise you, Bonzi, how many people don't know that. They figure the stiffer it is, the more distance they'd get.

I guess they figure the more like a baseball bat it is, the farther the ball should go.

I think that the lessons would be etter for long term help and also I am pretty satisfied with the clubs that I have now.

That is funny that you bring up a baseball bat. My friend somehow convinced himself that he could hit a golf ball with a baseball bat further than i can hit with my driver . At first i thought he was joking, but then when we went and got the stuff i knew he was serious. We each hit 5 ball, the first few i just warmed up on so both hit like 100 yards. Then my 3rd rip i just let go and crush it. Right after contact i look to see this expression on his face . Needless to say he hit it about 95 yards while i hit like 270.

You generate more speed with a LIGHTER shaft. a super light stiff flex will have more swing speed than a heavy regular flex shaft..

Right. If you'll excuse me, I need to go find my brain. It seems to have been missing, lately...

It's Friday - it happens to me more often than I care to admit on this day of the week!

I bought a SpeedStick recently, and I noticed the following. When I first go it, my swing speed was 104 mph – consistently – 104 - the more I used the stick the faster I got.

Once my swing speed increased, I could be swinging and get in the mid 120s, after I having practiced for 20 minutes or so, my speed went into the 130s - my point - prior to getting your swing speed check - I would swing a series of clubs for latest 15 minutes – warm up and get used to the swings – and your true swing speed would be more acutely measured. Your first attempts are bound to be your slowest..

As for my Speedestick, I like it. I am now at 137 mph – and it tops out at 140 – which I should be able to hit in about a week or so.

As for my drives – I haven’t noticed a difference – I am well under 300 – I think the lesson here is that there are no shortcuts; there is no substitute for sound technique!

At 137 mph you should be driving the ball 400 yards. I only swing about 105 - 110 mph and I hit my driver about 290 - 310.
