No, the shafts are ~0.4" apart (leaving me with a longer than standard PW for a 'standard' 3i).

So there is a length difference, yes - but not as pronounced as a .5" step. It falls much more in line with your physically best for hitting a golf ball.

In Chappy's case (which I've given much thought to), the only thing I can assume is that the lies are not bent equally way from standard (ie if the 3i is +1°, the PW is most likely more than that).

Would a 3 and 4 iron be any easier too hit if the shaft were the same length as a 5 iron?

Why do all the clubs have different lengths?

yes it would be easer but you would lose distance. the longer the shaft the wider the ark and the longer the ball goes, if you had a 50inch shaft in your driver it would go further than a 45 inch shaft if shaft were same type and used same head, but you would also find it harder to control and your shot your be more spread then then with a shorter shaft.
its like going down the grip say 2 inches and it takes of 5 to 10 yrds off the shot.

Yes, you would lose some distance. In the Tommy Armour EQL iron set, and the irons made by 1irongolf.com; if the loft was not adjusted, the long irons would play 'shorter' and the short irons would play 'longer'. However, in those scenarios, lofts are purposefully tweaked to prevent this. In the case of 1irongolf.com, the bounce is custom ground to reflect the 'odd' loft spacing.

Remember - distance is more a factor of sweetspot contact. My 85mph swing on the sweetspot goes just as far as my 100mph swing that misses. (swing speed numbers are an approximation).

Thats actually pretty interesting too consider the possibilities.
