  • Are there any excercises for arms getting ahead of body?

I have been diagnosed with my arms getting ahead of my body causing pulls left. I have one tip, that is to stop my swing at the top of the backswing then start my body turning then follow it with my arms. But as there are a lot of experts here I was wondering if there are any more tips I can use to cure this problem please?

    Sure, the Impact/Wall drill does this for you. If your arms lead, you will either need a new wall or some reconstructive surgery on your hands (-;

If you use a pivot-driven swing, then you need to get the kinetic sequence right.

You need to start the downswing with a pelvic shift-rotation movement.

See my downswing chapter for the details.

To improve the connection between your arms and upper body try this easy to follow drill:

Fold a towel and lay it across your chest then grip it under each armpit. Take a mid iron and make half swings so that the towel does not fall out. This will improve your feel for a better connected swing. Then work the same feeling into your full swing.

Thanks to everyone. I have been experimenting with these things today. As soon as I took it down the range WITH A BALL it was still bad. I wonder if I must be thick or something. The last one from Brian looks good. I tried it in the back yard. Will keep trying and see what happens when I get to the range again. Is this likely to take a long time?

Miffin, I think you are on the right track. I would guess you are either swinging from the top down (OTT, upper body lunge, upper before lower....all basically the same thing.) OR your lower body is locked up somewhere in the downswing and is blocking the upper body from turning through the ball (lifting out of spine angle, hip(s) thrusting out to the ball, stopping the hips before they fully rotate, etc.) It is almost impossible for the arms to outrace the body without one of these two actions being involved. "Connection" isn’t the problem, it’s the symptom.

I would suggest reading Jeff’s review paper in his post. If you are not operating in a manner somewhat or generally similar to this, I would suggest you start there. Greg’s "door" drill is great too especially in combination with his RHD wrist position.

My additional suggestion is to address the ball as normal and then slide from there directly to a proper impact position....hips open to some degree, the shoulders square or open a bit, shaft lean, clubhead right behind the ball. Get settled there. Then make a full backswing and downswing and hit the ball. Basically, hitting balls starting from impact position rather than address position.

            Good luck.

one thing you can try that is fairly simple and requires little thought is to take the your club back slow and steady and have a slight pause before you start your down swing. This will allow you to get things insink.

Trust me Bri, if you get your arms working more in front of your chest through impact with a good grip it will help to remove those pulls and produce better shots. I think you will only get into more problems if you consider things like kinetic sequencing and other complex analogies.

You should of course check your grip and alignment to ensure these are not creating or adding to the problem.

This is the one that my pro gave me so it must be on the right lines. The only problem I have got with it tho is that it interupts the smooth flow of the swing and I get all sorts of other weird faults. I am still trying to do it tho.

Hi, the pro checked grip and alignment and both OK. I think that I am getting a bit thick though. The trouble is that I cannot really understand or feel what is happening. Where you state "get your arms working more in front of your chest". I can't really picture that as I would have thought that was what I was overdoing. Don't want to be a pain but could you quantify that a bit more for me please.

                      Bri,

OK, take a look at this video, he uses a head cover under the left arm but it works on the same principal. I hope this helps to explain.

Sorry the sound quality is not good:

Actually, the drill suggested by Brian W is an excellect drill.

It is the regular practice regimen for Padraig Harrington, He hits all his shots at pregame warmups with head covers under both armpits. The surprising thing for me is that neither of the covers drop as he finishes his swing, so he does keep the connection all the way. He hits full drivers and everything. If you try this drill, you will see that it's difficult to retain both covers throughout the swing, as there is a tendency for one or the other of the upperarm/elbow to disconnect from the body. That is the beauty of this drill, as it really makes you work to reinforce the connection (the arms staying in front of the body). In actual play, I think the upper arms may separate, particularly in the release to a full high natural finish.

I watched the video Brian. It all makes sense to me now. I can actually understand what is supposed to be happening. Will take it into the yard later then down to the range and fingers crossed. Will let you know what happens. Thanks again to all.

Don't wanna appear abrasive, but that's the sort of thinking that leads to world wars.
