  • Struggling with swing thoughts!!!!!!

Help! Im really struggling with a lot of swing thoughs, and in particular, my thoughts compared to my instructors thoughts.

Ok, im a 28 handicap, never shot under 100, im at the stage where i can get 1 over on most holes, but have 5-6 awful holes, i.e. trees, water, 3 off the tee, and a few 3 putts which shoot me past 100.

My main problem area is that anything 7 and above, im very confident, get them off nice and straight, my long game is my problem, either 5 irons 150 yards, or long drives which either slice or hook.

Anyhow, after much reading, viewing on youtube etc, I've finally managed to find a consistant swing which gives me 200 yards straight at the range, drivers 240 etc. Basically, I take my backswing, keep left arm straight, on the downswing, I get a nice triangle, and my hips are open, although I do feel like im batting a cricket bat rather than swinging. Any attempt to cross the hands over results in a hook. My arms keep this triangle past impact.

However, my instructor is telling me im still out to in, and has got me working on holding the club to create lag, and told me to aim for an out to in path. However, I just feel its impossible, and im really struggling to get this pure inside path. If I pull down purely as ive seen suggested, i get a "chicken wing" on my left arm, and feel my right arm gets caught into my right side. Im also confused whether to start the downswing with a hip turn, bump to the left etc etc, as typical instructors only work on one part of your game without telling you the rest (great help huh).

Despite my poor scores on the course, im fit, been doing yoga and weights to improve my posture, im able to hold form, and able to try any suggestions that people may have.

Also, im wondering whether to just stick with what i've found seems to be working, or work on what im being taught. It seems to me from all the various readings and teachings that there is more than one way to hit a ball consistantly straight, but which is correct?

    yours very frustrated and confused

    Re: Struggling with swing thoughts!!!!!!

    Hi Amsie,

I too struggle with swing thoughts as I'm trying to control my slice especially when driving. I have 3 swing thoughts that work for me (Im a 25 handicapper):

    1. Shoulder - make sure I have a FULL shoulder turn
    2. Wrist - I make sure i bend back my right wrist (to the right) to help me get the swing on plane
    3. Pause - I slightly pause at the top which also helps me not to go over the top.

Swing thoughts are a very personal thing but this works for me, hope it helps!

have a look at the '3 magic moves' threads, or 3skills.this will improve your swing and cut down your swing thoughts.

The rollover of the arms causes the hooks? THen you are swatting the wrists. Like Ozzy said about the right wrist bent back to the right (assume you are right handed), this will create the lag, power and path you desire.

Then you can roll and MUST roll the arms to square it up and create that whip that is the sweet effortless pop we all know and love.

It's a bit like holding back with the hands, but you will soon realize that you get to go at a shot as hard as you want without the hook worry.

          Greg is spot on there.

Take a look at this site to understand how the wrists need to work (and not work):

            Re: Struggling with swing thoughts!!!!!!

            Greg,
I just discovered your right hand release drill yesterday. I have been struggling for several years with trying to figure out what the hands and wrists are supposed to be doing at impact. I bought the DVD from AJ Bonair and tried his technique, turning the handle of the club like a screwdriver to square the face but I could never time it to be consistent. Part of the problem is videos like this:

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi06F...atch-main-area

which seem to advocate exactly the opposite of what you are advocating, unless I am misunderstanding him and or you completely. I am looking forward to going to the course and trying your drills tomorrow, because it seems to make sense and nothing else has worked for me.

I have seen that video, and it is contrary to my fundamentals. I can see why you would be confused. Try the RHD and see what results you get.

I found this drill online - it seems to be the drill that you describe doing.

I dont like that last video much, his hands are too far ahead at impact creating a blocking position which would create poor striking and shots.

Take another look at the link I posted, that shows you clearly how to be at impact and importantly how not to be.

                      Re: Struggling with swing thoughts!!!!!!

Well, I spent some time at the range working on the drills with mixed results. When I first started on Friday I was able to hit the ball very solidly and directly online. Today, however, I tried to do the same thing and hit the ball as badly as I ever have. At one point I hit about 15 shanks in a row, and I hit countless balls fat, thin, every type of miss you can imagine. I do not think the drill or the technique is the problem though - I am fairly certain that it is my own incompetence. I probably have a tendency to not make a good shoulder turn when I take half swings, I am probably gripping the club way to tightly in an attempt to hold the wrist angle, and I am pretty sure that I am spinning my shoulders hard to the left in order to try to square the clubface. Put all those together and you can see why I am probably suffering from the dreaded shank. I'll keep trying though.

                        Re: Struggling with swing thoughts!!!!!!

A shank happens when you lead the hozel into the ball, the clubface is normally very open and trailing the hozel.

make sure you are well balanced with your weight on the balls of your feet, arms not too close to your body. Grab a wedge and make some easy swings at the ball but make sure you rotate your wrists through impact, this almost always cures the problem.
