  • After 15 years of trying, I think I've sorted out my swing faults

I've always hit the ball to the right with every club as well, driver, wedges even with the putter. Couldn't figure out why even though people told me I aimed right.

I've had lessons, filmed my swing, had video lessons, used training aids. Nothing seemed to work !

In the last 2 years I've gone into overdrive with this problem. Every spare hour I went to the practise area. It is all I thought about. Wondered if my poor eyesight had anything to do with it. It was all very frustraiting !

I always knew I had good timing, tempo and course managment. I could always score in the 70's but I had no consistency. After a 270 yard drive I would hit a gap wedge from 50 yards straight right into a bunker !

The flaws were clearly there to be seen; I swayed too much to the right on the backswing, had a three quarter swing with little wrist hinge. I hit everything with an open clubface !

Anyway I think I've sorted it out. I've had many false dawns where I've hit the ball well for a round or 2. But nothing ever lasted !

It's such a simple thing as well, to do with my setup. My fault was my shoulders were always closed. This caused all the problems in my swing. What I've always done in setting up to the ball is grip the club with my left hand, reach out and then add my right hand. This for some reason caused closed shoulders, a weak right hand grip, and tilted head and shoulders. With this setup I would always sway miles right with my body when I swung and the ball would sail miles right.

Now I grip the club keeping the my hands close to my body, I set up with my feet and then inch the club head towards the ball. Everything feels so much better, I can see / feel my shoulders are square. My Dad told me the other day my setup was perfect. Perfectly square !

And that's it !, hitting the ball brilliantly at the moment, scored 70, 72, 74, 72 and 72 in the last 5 rounds !

Works with my putting as well. My setup routine is simliar to Lee Westwood's now. I inch the putter towards the ball, I don't reach out like before !

Anyway I'm amazed how simple my fault was !

    All those years !

    All those idea's !

I think alot of my Dad's faults stem from his set up as well !

My last 10 rounds: Average is 72.7

Just been looking thru my records, that's the best 10 round average since 2003. (I did 10 rounds in 72 with a 67 and 69 !)

    It's looking good !

I'm glad your improvement is looking sustained! When I saw your OP, one half of my brain thought "well done!" whereas the other half was putting very short odds on a quick come-down!

      Well played sir!

I agree with what you say; I've had many false dawn's were I've hit the ball great for a week or so and then it would go back to normal.

The most pleasing thing are the comments from my Dad during the round. He has told me in the last 2 rounds that my allignment is 'spot on'. In the past everybody has told me I was aiming right !

Might have spoken too soon !

Worst round in 6 weeks; gross 77.

Might have been one of those rounds. Hit some awfull shots. Not all right though, hooks, mis-hits, slices, pushes and pulls !

No single putts on the back nine either !

God I have had so many false dawns too . I wouldn't worry too much. Just relax and play the percentage shots.

Re: After 15 years of trying, I think I've sorted out my swing faults

I feel this is an adequate thread to post this.

Having now returned to full time work, which has coincided with the lapse of my club membership, and now that I have a wedding to pay for : ), I am not renewing membership at my club and will probably only be able to play twice a month at best.

So I go out for a round at our local muni on Sunday.

After almost 3 years of trying to be able to consistently shape the ball both ways and hit it high and low, with minimal success in the consistency stakes, I played quite possibly one of my best ball-striking and putting rounds I've ever had. Chipping wasn't that great. But that's always been the first thing to disappear with lack of play, for me.

I was "seeing and doing" all day long. Big drives, accurate irons, and it all felt so natural. I've never felt like that in any round of golf before. Comfortable to the max. I've never experienced the complete lack of fear because I knew I was going to be able to hit whatever shot I wanted ot hit.

              Typical.

Maybe if I play once a year I'll be shooting -3 by 2011.

              Stupid game.

It seems that if it really doesn't matter, and you truly PLAY playfully, the course can be there for the taking.

Last 3 scores have been 70,72 and 72 - so the scoring has come back !

The golf course is soft at the moment which suits my game.

I've hit some pushes mainly 3 irons. everything else has been good.

I don't know why these push shots creep into my game every now and again !

Clubface is kept open, only a bit but enough to push it.

Only 15 years, well done!. Seriously the best part is even after the false dawns, and we all have them, you know where to go back to fix it.
                    Happy golfing

This must be my longest false dawn ever.

                      last 21 rounds, average 72.6.

9 out of 10 rounds 72 or less.

Everything seems to hinge on my head position. I've always had this head tilt to the right. Don't know why I do it ? Habit I reckon !

Anyway what I'm doing now is moving my head to the left. (I touch my left ear onto my left shoulder ). I then move my head a little in a position what I think is vertical, so there is no head tilt. Swing feels great, shots are great !

I think the head tilt to the right encouraged a sway with my upper body and that's why I pushed everything.
