  • practice regime

    I'v come with a new practice regime for myself and I was just wondering what everyone thinks of it!!

    visit my pro once a month to work on swing

    Driving range once a week working on what Iv being going over with the pro (1 hour)

    short game practice area once a week working on a couple aspects of my short game thats giving me problems (1 hour)

    practice putting green once a week doing putting drills (1 hour)

    on the course twice a week


    once university is finished for summer Im aiming to increase it to

    2 driving range sessions a week
    2 short game sessions a week
    2 putting sessions a week
    3 rounds a week (at least)
    3 workout sessions a week working on fast reps of 3 x 10 with lots of stretching

    what does everyone think
    can anyone see any changes to make

    Looks good to me. I wish I had the time to practice like that!

      cct,

      Looks great for the swing and game...................however no time is set to one side for the mental aspect of the game, this can be more important than the swing itself.


      I practice twice every week at the range........I make sure one session is hitting balls without thinking about the swing at all.


      harder than you think....try it.

        If I were you I'd be spending more time golfin than that while your at uni. Ive just finished St Andrews uni and I know how little work you really have to do! Go I was on the course at least 3 times a week and at the practice ground on other days and my handicap went from 18 when I started to 5 when I finished. Inth esummer I was a barman at a golf club so got free balls at the range and had all day to practice. Most of all enjoy it- Im 6 months into a full time job and its I wish Id spent even more time on the course- At least I get to play twice this weekend- Gullane 1 tomorrow!

          I wish I could james but i also work 3 nights a week!
          I don't know why my uni course is so much work. One of my mates does another uni course and never has any work, but I always seem to have design presentations to do, which take ages to do all the drawings and presentation boards!!!!

          Ian, is swinging the club without thinking about your swing how to practice your mental game. Can you expand a bit more on it cause I would love to practice the mental side of the game

            Hi Craig,

            Swinging without thinking is how you should play on the course........


            Every person has a "little man" inside that initially helps you (your body) develop/change a swing....however as you get resonably good at this game you need to let go of him to make the transition to play really good golf.

            What happens is: when you swing the little man tries to talk the body through the swing eg.. shoulders first, break wrists, stay on plane, weight back etc etc.......

            Can you imagine......every morning you walk down stairs or steps at the office....??do you have to think how to do this......can you imagine the book "start at the top of the stairs, using your right leg first....bend at the knee shifting weight to right as you lower down to the first step, then shift weight again to the left"" nightmare you would never get down stairs.


            Golf is the same....you body is very capable of hitting a golf ball once trained without the use of the little man.....harder than it sounds but you need to learn to keep him occupied.

            On the range........You have to train yourself to hit the ball with a clear mind, train yourself to feel the swing without actually giving yourself any instructions at all......I find it easy to settle on the ball with a quiet mind and hit it....try and analize the shot after you have hit the ball not during. Another way to start training yourself is counting one on the backswing and two at impact quietly to yourself, humming a tune during the swing is another great way to practice.


            On the course........its easy train him to think about wind, lie, pin position, target, your eyes give the body all the information it needs and using some of the skills you develop on the range hit the ball with a clear mind.

            I have learned alot about this and I managed a level par 70 at my own course, I started a thread a few weeks ago to tell everyone.

            I have now read a few books but the one that explains this in more detail is "The Inner Game of Golf" by Tim Gallwey. This is without doubt the best book I have every read and I owe my first scratch round to this book.

            Get the 1984 version with a green cover.

              Iv got that book on my bookshelf but aint got round to reading yet.... ah well the easter holiday is approaching time to get it out n blow the dust off it i think.

                I'm gobsmacked.................Can't belive you haven't read it....I was only 4 or 5 pages in and I was hooked.

                  Best golf book- Jack Nicklaus Golf My Way..... no contest

                  Explains everything really well but doesnt try and change your swing, the best advice for weekend golfers.
