  • Double Interlock/Overlap grip

First of all I'd like to say that I've enjoyed lurking on the forum taking things in. This is my first post..

Any one tried it out (double overlap grip) ??

Been really struggling with getting on-plane in the backswing until I was messing about down the range and stumbled upon the double overlap grip - basically top two fingers on right hand overlapping bottom two on left - i'm right handed.

It seemed to unify my hands on the backswing and I can (or so it seems to my untrained eye) get back on a far better plane ( i had/still have a tendency to let the right had roll the club far too far inside).

Also stumbled upon an article by Leadbetter who is advocating this grip (or so it seems - mind you he's also advocated every other grip at one time or other). And the octopus that is Jim Furyk uses a double overlap grip on tour - apparently is allows him to maintain wrist angle/ lag into the ball.

    So swing experts:

Will I run into problems down the line ?

Is there anything I really need to be doing in other parts of my swing ?

At the minute I seem to be making good solid contact - bad shot is still a push to the right though

    Cheers

    Re: Double Interlock/Overlap grip

I i was taught to use the overlap, or vardon grip. I have had pretty good success using it, but in the last 6 months i have tried the interlock grip and found that using that i felt more controll with my hands. To add to your question it is personal perfence which grip you use. you cannot get into swing problem from using one grip or another, but you can from not gripping correctly.

I ain't a PGA pro or anything, but this sounds like the classic hacker's grip to me; impossible to hit down on the ball with. What this is basically saying is right palm towards the sky, which to me would be wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Most weekend hacks I see have a right hand grip like that, and I can't see how you could hit a golf ball well with it.

That being said, I tried the double overlap, and it just felt wierd.

I may have misinterpreted/misread what you wrote or vice versa. What I was understanding is that you were saying the right palm should be facing towards the sky at address? Maybe I understood you wrong...

hi fellow hackers, this is the first i herd of the double overlap or interlock but i can see how in might help with getting more lag and not let a person get so wristy in there swing. i know im gonna give it a try to see what happens.what works for one might not work for the other. all ya have to do is have a basic good swing, if ya find some thing that works for you go with it. look at tommy 2 gloves on big break i think his knuckles on right hand face the target (hahahahahaha) but he can hit the ball great. ps i hope he wins he seems like the only one with the confidence to do it.

Re: Double Interlock grip - love it...

            Hei -

I'm trying to get my shoulders thru the ball on plane as a cure for, well basically, missing all the greens. One symptom I've noticed though, is I've lost some "snap" (unable to lag the club well, when concenctrating on getting the shoulders through).
Anywho, I use an interlocked grip normally, so going to double interlocked is just a step further for me. Result after 2 buckets? Felt great, my distance came back, and as long as I get my shoulders thru, good accuracy (instant hook if I stop up). I did tend to have an even stronger grip, that seemed extreme to me - but I could take my backswing up so the shaft was like a waiter's tray at the the top, and consistently hit long straight shots. It seemed to remove the tendency for me to get "handsy" with the club. (steering the club).
My only skepticism is the "even stronger" grip, which gives me a feeling that I'm getting extreme here. My normal grip alignment only gave me pushes (so I made my grip stronger until the ball went straight).

              Re: Double Interlock/Overlap grip

The trouble with the double overlap is it weakens the rotational capabilities of the right hand effectively taking 2 fingers off the club. If u want a grip that gives u lag try a conventional grip interlock/overlap strenghten the left hand so you can see all 16 knuckles then weaken the right hand the opposite way. Anatomically this enables you to create a massive hinge, but beware, it's not renowned for accuracy!!

I used a baseball grip(small hands) and it done me just fine.

I tried single overlap this season (on a pros advice) and it was OK ,but double just felt very strange with no control whatsoever over the clubhead.

Back to baseball for me next season.
