  • Where`s the Samaritan`s number - I`ve had it.

I had a lesson yesterday, first one since last March and I was devastated to see the video of me doing EXACTLY the same things wrong as I was last March - swinging low round the body, turning hips too much, left arm bending 90 degrees at the top then casting over the top - and I`ve been ingraining this garbage all summer, about 4 rounds a week plus a couple of range sessions a week.
Yeah, I`ve got a drill to work on from the Pro, but I did last March as well, and as I`ve said before, I may as well get a set of left handed clubs and start again.

    Hi Kerry,

You can't expect to go all summer with the same swing you need to work on your swing all of the time, once you work on something you then go to far and have to work back.

My sugestion is find something that is your most common fault.something you slip back to over and over again within a couple of months, once you find it.........going inside on backswing or whatever it might be.

Find a preshot routine that constantly reinforces the opposite to your major swing fault, for me if i'm not careful I cast from the top, so my practice swing every time I make sure I pump down then follow through smoothly, just to remind myself not to cast. You must stick with this part of your preshot all year and just add little things that you may be working on.

Good Luck and keep working. It's like having a puppy dog "its not just for Christmas"

    Ian.

would you consider yourself to have a flat backswing?

Mariner - i sympathise with you - its heartbreaking when you think you are doing one thing but actually doing another!

I am sure your pro will be helping you but just hearing you describe your faults i can see your swing. If you want my advice (which i'll give but you dont have to take!) you need to work on your posture and takeaway.

First with your posture, get a good golf book or surf the web and find a good posture routine (golf digest is always good). Knees flexed, bottom out back straight and arms relaxed and near to vertical. Really focus on this.

Now for you first move in the backswing you need to concentrated on swinging the club back with your arms and shoulders but keeping your legs as still as you can. REALLY MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR BACK LEG BENT THROUGHOUT THE BACKSWING. By creating the resistance in your legs you will not be able to turn your hips so much. The better posture will help you with your swing plane - which i suspect is a bit flat in the backswing.

hope this is of some help

Yes, this is one of the things I`ve got to work on, keeping the legs still (as if they`re stuck in concrete up to the knee I`ve gotta think) but the main thing the pro said to work on is to really hood the clubface on the takeaway in an exaggerated fashion and keep the clubhead way out in front of me for as long as possible and just do half swings like that

Yes, my hands are hardly above shoulder height at the "top" of my backswing

I had my first range session devoted to not moving from the waist down last night and I was quite encouraged, by how straight and long I was even with what felt like a half swing.
It was off a tee admittedly (I usually practice off the mat) but I need to get some confidence and timing in.
I find bending the right knee a little more (to stop it straightening) as I swing back helps although looking in the mirror it is getting dangerously near a reverse pivot . . .

                  Weight seems fairly evenly distributed - I`m 5`9" and 12.5 st (82k)

straightening right knee in the backswing is partially from your weight being too much on the balls of your feet, you will also loose spine angle in the backswing too because of the weight. I posted this part for another person but it applies to you too "Basically, Hogan was shorter and put his weight on his heels, this helps to swing more upright and helps stop the clubhead from flipping to the inside, you may think he was flat but look at his CLUB HEAD path. . If your weight is too much on your balls then YOU WILL NEVER swing more upright no matter what you try. Subconscious movements dictate this. at address you need to be able to lift the BALLS of your feet without too much effort." Here is a drill to feel some things. Take your club put almost ALL the weight on the balls of your feet, now swing up to 10:00 postion on a VERY VERY upright backswing plane and stop there tell me what you feel while HOLDING that position for 5 seconds. Now with weight in same spot swing back flat and have arms at 10:00, stop there and tell me what you feel. Now put weight ALMOST ALL on heels and swing to a VERY VERY upright position and stop at 10:00, with weight on heels swing back flat and stop at 10:00, tell me what you feel. You should report back 4 feelings. Go grab a club and do that and get back to me.

I cant give addvise on this matter my self but when I have trouble with my swing I sit in front of the telly and watch Colin Montgomerie do warm up swings (I have a video) just swings in a I taped in a tourniment . I go out and think about that practice swing of His and I swing a lot better my self .U just watch the relaxed way he swings briliant.

then either A. you are not doing it right, or B. you just dont feel it. Moral of the story, keep the weight on the heels more for shorter players, it encourages a more upright swing and that is what we need since we are in a flatter position to begin with.

I don`t think anything is going to stop me hitting short high fades so I think I`ll forget all swing mechanics and just play with what I bring to the course and concentrate on the short game from 100 yards and in.

I was reading about the 16 year old Korean Schoolgirl that won the Australian Ladies Masters Tournament beating a bunch of the world's top women professionals.
Amazing story, since she can hardly speak english, and her coach cannot speak Korean. He reckons he has a unique training method. I
great website, www.golf-school-australia.com They offer 11 pages of photos and diagrams that they send to you. They are excellent, and it's well worth signing up for!

I've since learned that the coach that wrote them is the director of the Australian High Performance Golf Academy, and coached that young amateur Korean schoolgirl. The website claims lower scores in record time. I reckon he must have achieved that with her, so he must practise whet he preaches. have a look at www.golf-school-australia.com
