  • GregJWillis - Right hand drill

I have long been confused about what role the wrists played in the golf swing. After taking a look at Greg's drill I have a question or two. Greg mentions "take the club back to 1/2 way with the shoulder turn and allow the wrists to rise "UP" only (remember #1 - up and down is okay). The club shaft is pointing up in the air and the left arm is parallel to the ground." With the exception of the driver and fairway woods, would you recommend setting everything this early in the swing? I feel like I have no idea when/if my wrists set on the backswing, but do create 'lag' on the downswing. Seems much easier to have the wrists already set and naturally uncock just before impact. Am I headed in the right direction here?

BTW here is Greg's site: Golf Lessons - GregJWillis

This is just for the drill. Taking the shoulders 1/2 way first, then letting the wrists set allows you to see/feel better the up/dn angle. For the full swing, you will adopt a more natural flowing motion that still allows the wrists to maintain this same action.

correct me if I'm wrong, but the right hand drill drives home the point that setting of the wrists is an up hinge and the release of the wrists is a down hinge. Its a bit counter intuitive to what you would think, because it is an opposite motion to the rotational movement of the body.

An early wrist set is a good thing IMO, I read an article by Adam Scott in last months Golf Monthly where he stated this is what he's been working on

A good feeling is to try and feel like you push the club back with the left hand whilst simalteneously pulling *up* the right wrist.(a la Gregs drill). By the time your left arm is parallel to the ground you should have good width and the wrists should be fully set. From here you only need go back a bit further maintaining that width. This is the principle of gadgets like Leadbetters swingsetter which forces you to set the club on plane early so those magnet things click

If youve been used to a long swing with stiff wrists then this will feel very short and almost like youre picking the club up but this IS the right feeling to have

Definitely agree with you. I think so many people read about the importance of a one-piece takeaway that they forget to hinge their wrists at all. I know that this has been a big problem for me - I have concentrated for so long on the mantra of a "low and slow" one-piece takeaway that I have developed a backswing where my wrists don't hinge until the very top of my swing.

And by the time that happens, because of the position my arms and shoulders are already in, my brain ends up mistaking a cupping of the left wrist with a cocking of the left wrist and I end up with an open face as a result.

For me, the proper wrist action (as demonstrated by my pro) really feels like I'm picking the club up.

Just for a check if you are practicing your backswing, your wrists should be fully hinged by the time your left arm is parallel to the ground, which should result in your club pointing straight up to the sky.

I had a big problem taking the club back way too far inside. I started working on creating some width in the takeaway and I think I began to neglect how to properly set the club. Thanks for the insight gentlemen.
