Re: Immediate cure for coming over the top

James - the title of the book is the fundamentals of hogan by david leadbetter - you can find it on amazon. It was a really interesting and enjoyable read - showed what a great golfer Hogan was but also why you should be very careful copying him.

Bazet - his swing is beautiful to watch and he was some athlete. As above i would say try and get a read of the book as it will help you if you are trying to convert to a flatter swing and mentions some of the pitfalls in copying Hogan's technique. I have read that link you sent before and i really like the right knee thoughts - something i really work on in my swing.

As to 1 plane and 2 plane - i have read that book as well (harding?). I don't really like the ideas in it but from what i can remember a lot of differences in the swings were as a result of an address change (ie more bent over leads to more one plane). If you are having problems going to 1 plane maybe adress is where you need to start?

    cheers

Yeah, I think to bend more on address, so my swing will more round the body..like a rotary.

I'm using interlock grip, whereas the late Hogan use overlapping....Moe Norman use 10 finger grip......Should I use overlapping grip on OPS attempt ?

      Btw I'm 180cm and 73kg...

      Here my video swing

Ben Hogan need 4 months to perfect his OPS........so I don't think an overnight swing attempt will work....maybe it will take me a year or 2 on that...I love OPS......

I've experimented with something like this. One thing I do is, instead of a "waggle" I do a couple of takeaways, taking the club back to at least horizontal and then bringing it back down, turning hips--i.e., "rehearsing" the impact. The other thing, similar to your idea, is to rotate my head *at address* so that I can only see the ball with my left eye. This way I don't have to "follow" the club back with my eyes; they're already in a position to see it go back.

bazet - i like your swing there - some good motions there. One point you may want to work on is to get your arms a bit more vertical at address and stand a touch closer to the ball. Your arms are basically on the same angle as your club. This will rob you of some power.

As to your grip - I wouldn't change it if its comfortable and your shots go reasonably straight

            Nick,
Thanks for the comment I really appreciated it.
I just read Hardy's book about the Plane Truth.......OPS will need atheletic body build and neutral to strong grip...and minimize hips movement...

            OPS swinger
            - Ben Hogan
            - Peter Jacobsen
            - Sergio Garcia ~ modern ben Hogan
            - Ernie Els ( old one )
            - Tiger Woods ( new swing )
            - Bobby Jones
            - Sam Snead
            - The White Shark ( looks like OPS to me )

Re: Immediate cure for coming over the top

I am working on two drills at the moment as i have started to come over the top and am trying to get rid of it before it becomes ingrained (5 years is a long time to find a cure). The first drill is the three ball drill where you place three balls on an angle and hit the one in the middle without clipping the other two
the other one i have seen Butch Harmon demonstrate sticking a club shaft in the ground behind his right foot to stop any backward movement of the hips. I have spent the past two nights on the practice fairway (total 4 hours) and i am getting that nice draw i once had back again looking forward to playing tomorrow to see if the hard work has paid off

I really want to thank you for yor discovery.I was suffering from the same problem for a very long time.Yesterday I went to the range and tried your sugestion and the results were inmediate.I could not believe it.So after 50 balls it felt so good that I stopped practicing and went to the course and played a beautifull round.Again thank you.I would like to know if you think that this is something that would have to be done all the time or if after practicing like this for a while you think you will de able to keep your head still

I tried the 'looking at the ball with the left eye only' tip last night at the range and I have to say I was nailing a 5 wood 180 yards straight into a v. cold wind. Worked great with a 4 iron too, the only thing I did notice though was a much higher ball flight than usual - may just have been the wind though? - Ill try again in a couple of nights but so far so good - a great tip!

I`m glad it works for you too - I think you`ll just keep doing it because it works and eventually it will become a natural move.

                      Mariner,

Since I am also an OTT swinger, I read your post about a week ago, printed it out and decided to try it at the range. Well I've been sick all week and just got out today. My first try with your method was so-so, but then I was hitting a fairly nice draw with my driver. (I usually fade that club.) As you said the contact was much better. It was very weird to trust this technique, but I have to say after hitting through most of my clubs it worked great for me. I think what it does primarily is keep your spine angle in place. I feel when I'm following the club back I also stay behind the strike much better. I'm playing this Saturday and plan on using the method. Thanks again for the tip.

wow...sounds like it's working for everyone - I'm anxious to go try it myself right now, although I already played my 18 for the day.

Thanks for the tip mariner and hope it works for me too!

nicklaus used to rotate his head back before his backswing

i read in some golfmagazine about looking at the ball with only the left eye promotes a more level swing

I'm assuming you keep your head still during the swing?? Or do you have Annika Sorenstam type move where you move your head through impact. Please advise. Thanks!

My head is fairly still during the swing after it`s turned back and stayed there, then it just comes up naturally wih the follow through, and at no time am I looking at the ball!
