  • I've lost my swing..please help

This week has been horrible for me. I am a good solid golfer. I usually shoot in the low 80's at my home course. However I have suddenly lost my swing. I seem to be hitting the ball off the hozel a lot. Also when I get solid contact the ball goes to high. I was hitting my driver higher then my PW. I got try outs for my high school golf team next week and time is running out. I just get a lot of shanks, grounders, short slices, and short hooks. I just got back from the range, hit a 105 balls, and none went over a 100 yards, unless I hit my driver, which went 150. If I went out right now and played 18 I would probably shoot a 150. Please help me.

    Hey JD7,

Sounds like you got some stuff goin' on. I need to know a few things.

On the mental side of your game, anticipating a try out or a big tournament can change your normal rythmn. Do you feel your tempo has changed? Do you have more swing thoughts going through your head that normal? Remember your subconsious mind controls the golf swing. Give your concious mind something to do like count your tempo. Think "One and" on the back swing and "Two" at impact. Nothing else. Keep it simple.

On the Mechanical side, has anything changed in your swing? new clubs, shaft changes...

Well I did just get new clubs 3 weeks ago but I am pretty sure thats not the problem because I shot 81 the week before I lost my swing. My tempo does feel off. My setup and swing just doesnt feel the same and I keep trying to fix it. Try outs are in two days so I am trying to practice a lot. Tomarrows my last day to get ready so I am going to go to the range and hit 2 large baskets with my friends, so hopefully they can help me as well. I do think I am thinking to much about my swing when I hit, I'll try the 1,2 drill.

        Ya gotta relax,

All the extra time you have been putting in may be counterproductive. Before your next practice session, take a hot bath, real hot. Listen to some relaxing music. Calm yourself. You have to be in control of your emotions and get every thought out of your head. You must keep conversations light and off golf. Just trust your swing.

            JD7,

One last tought, on the day of your tryout, visualize the best shot you have ever hit from each area of the course. Let your mind go, when you can hear the blades of grass rustle under your golfball and nothing else you have reached golf nirvana. When you can see the flight of the ball in your minds eye and when your momentum pulls you through the swing the ball is on that path. You have reached golf nirvana. It's a lofty place to be, few get there but it is the end of the journey.

            Good Luck,

                              JD,

I looked at the pictures but can't see enough detail when they are enlarge to give you an acurate assessment. Please send me an AVI or some large pictures. Jpgs are notorious for getting blocky when enlarged. The background is so busy your swing disappears into it.

When you shoot a golf swing try to position the camera about waist high. You will be centered in the shot. If you can borrow a digital video camera with a high speed or sports setting that would be best. I have a cable modem and could look at it tommorrow night. Unless you can do it in about 2 hours and post it.
