I would suggest that any golfer who says they've never thrown a club is either a liar or a poseur. To all of you "gentlemen golfers" out there, respectively..

If you count 123-4 where you start to take the club back on the 1, continue to the top on 2 and 3 (all one continuous movement) then whack the ball on 4! Thats the 3-1 timing.
This thread has made me decide to take the MP3 player up the range tonight and give TT a go again, I'll report in tomorrow morning with the results!

Great, I will be waiting to hear back from you.. If a muscle in my shoulder/side somewhere wasn't feeling a bit strained when I swing the club I'd give it a go as well by just trying to do it in my head. Having to give it a rest so hopefully I can play Saturday and Sunday without too much of a problem.
It is on a 3 beat time as you are saying not impact at 1 again.
1-takeaway 2-top of backswing/and start of downswing in a flowing move 3-IMPACT. simple.
As Sklep JR says, not every shot is going to be a perfect 3:1 ratio, we aren't robots or metronomes after all, but, striving to get your swing as close to this seems to result in good shots. As long as you have fairly solid basics and understanding of the swing and it's fundamentals then concentrating on this timing seems to work nicely. I'm not suggesting that you don't have to keep continually checking your posture, setup, alignment etc, that would be silly, but once you keep an eye on these things and you're happy that you get into relatively correct positions in the swing, then all you need think about is this rhythm. Humming them in your head doesn't work BTW, you instinctively match up the humms in yor head with your swing positions without even realising it. Try it with this on your headphones and you'll realise how different it is!
one swing (after you say "one" start the swing )
two (club should be to parallel)
three set the wrists (after your say three)
two Impact
two follow through
three
repeat the above sequence
as you can see it is very fast from setting the wrists to impact point. You really need the cd because the sounds on the cd trigger the swing positions. It would be difficult to do this yourself without the cd.

I have "tour tempo" as well. The book said that you would find the tracks fast but I actually found 21/7 to be a little slow. I think there is some merit on not focusing on mechanics and going for pure timing, but it is not going to cure any swing flaws, if you hit from the top you still will. Also I found the tracks to be a bit annoying, as I would go through my pre-shot routine, picking out a target etc they would distract me quite a bit. As someone else said, it is easy to get into a rhythm at the range and just pound balls "down the centre" but one should really pick out a specific target and go for that. I have watched friends of mine hit a bucket of balls at the range, just whacking them into the distance, spraying them over a wide area and then say, "man i'm hitting so straight", when in reality they were spraying it all over the place, but the open confines of the range made them think they were straight. Anyway that's my 2 cents worth.
and i thought i was winding people up ! jesper your spot on .some great swings on this site.Dont change your tempo, because you change your rhythm and thats the last thing you want.as for tempo the thing that really changes your tempo is your backswing and that throws this 3 to 1 ratio out the window for most of us anyway.some golfers have slow deliberate backswings and thats fine by me if it gets the results.ps when i say change your tempo i mean for a full shot.[swing]

Look at what I found over at "How To Break 80" by Jack Morehouse:
"3. You will need really good rhythm in order to achieve your best distance and accuracy. Don’t be tempted to make a quick move from the top of your swing, which can ruin your entire tempo and sequence of events. (Most high handicappers make this mistake). You can counteract this movement by developing internal counting during your swing. Counting "one one thousand" on your backswing and "two one thousand” on the downswing will help to create a smooth rhythm."
I hate to say this but it sounds like some of us are getting to technical on a non technical part of the swing....tempo.....it's the feel of the swing here that counts.....I have been following this thread and find it quite interesting.....I went out to hit some balls with this in mind and tring to get this 3/1 FEEL in my swing.....I needed to be a little bit faster and as soon as I speeded up my tempo my shots starting being more crisp and consistent.....I even found theat if I then tried to slow down the tempo but still strived for that 3-1 timing the shots were still consistent.....I love this thread I only wish I had more time available to really work at it.....A lot of thoughtful points have been brought up.......very good golf talk here!! Keep it up guys.

So bigguy, what did you actually do in striving for the 3-1 tempo? That is, how did you go about it? Do you have the CD or did you count to yourself or what??
I know this sounds too simple but I just counted to my self trying to get the timing of 1-2-3 top of the swing four--impact. It works for me.....this is not a miracle cure just one of those lights going on things where my timing and tempo of the swing came back and at least became more consitent. I think using the ipod would get a little distracting to me waiting to try to time it up with the pre-recorded beats

If you count in your mind or out aloud to yorself it doesn't work nearly as well, I tried this a long time before I ever got this CD. As I said before, you will instinctively slow down or speed up your counting to match up with your swing, you won't even realise you're doing it and then you'll feel that your tempo is in a fine groove. But when you actually try swing to this beat which is perfectly in time and never alters you'll realise quickly enough how bad your tempo actually is. As for the ipod being distracting, it's not too bad, I put it in my back pocket and put the earphone cable up my shirt. I only put in one earpiece into my left ear and put the volume down quite low. Then as I'm hitting balls I can get nice aural feedback of the contact in my right ear. I don't want to get too used to the beats that when I'm on the course I can't function properly without them, so I try incorporate some natural feel with the drill.

I started with a try today counting but it was first time I had swung the club all week. No range practice at all so wasn't able to stick with it. I did notice however when I just consciously go more slowly into my forward swing to the ball things work out much better. Still I am going to keep all this in mind and try to slow my swing down all around for a while and try to find some "natural" tempo..
