  • New clubs, new issues...

    Hey Guys.
Need some advice. I'm pretty new to golf and I play at a 23 handicap or so. I just bought a new set of irons. I used to play pre-owned Callaway
X-12s with graphite shafts. These were very light, but pretty clunky and with zero feel. So I traded them in for Mizuno MX 900s with steel shafts. These clubs look great and have many game improvement features. I swung them well in the store and had them fitted.

When I got them out to the range, I was pretty concerned. Now, again I'm new to golf, but these clubs just feel so heavy. Much heavier than my old clubs. They have a lot of forgivness weight at the head and the shafts are steel. When I started hitting them decent (after 30 balls or so...) I noticed my distance was much less. I know I'm adjusting to the new clubs, but I thought these new clubs would feel so much better. Is this normal? Should I be worried? How long does a typical new club take to feel right? Will the distance come back?

    Thanks.

The distance may come back. The mizuno's are 1° weaker in loft, so there should be a little distance loss just in a loft comparison. You also may be swinging the heavier clubs slower - lower swing speed will also lead ot a distance loss.

Your new clubs will be, on average, 30 to 50 grams heavier, just on account of the steel shaft - obviously a noticable distance. If it doesn't feel good, then you might want to go back to graphite, or lightweight steel. I'd make sure, first, that it's truly something you can't live with (the extra weight). Some people with aggressive swings like a heavier club to help keep them on plane, and keep their tempo.

      Thanks Low,
I've noticed on these boards you definatley know your stuff when it comes to equipment...etc.

I figured the new weight would lead to distance loss. It's pretty significant, though. Like almost a full club. It was only about 90 balls I hit, but I gotta say The Mizunos don't feel that different, beyond being heavier. Maybe I'm not good enough to notice though. I'd like to give it a few more range sessions and I'm playing a round of 18 on Sunday.

What would be a reasonable determination for a return of the clubs? I know it's subjective, but on average, how long should new clubs take to either work for you or not? Should I expect an adjustment round or two before deciding? Sorry, its just that I have no idea.

        hi sandmac
it took me 3 or 4 rounds to get used to my new irons but my problem was overhitting. i bought mizuno mx15 and the flight was higher but also longer. i suppose if your know after 3/4 rounds that you are swinging okay and they still are not performing as desired then its time to find a solution. i was looking to get the mx900's but after a couple of sessions at the store i deciced against them as the felt dead no feedback from them!
hope you get it sorted mate
