  • help again please

My last post was about my problem with wrolling the wrists on the take away in order to get the club face up,golfbald gave me a suggestion which worked wonders for the first round.

Since then I have played 3 more disaster rounds and I am back to my cycle of being unsure and confidence low this has been ongoing for 1 year.

Can anyone please help with more of an explanation to what thoughts or what body mechanics happens on the take away.

A freind suggested whom plays off 7 that I keep the club face facing the ball for as long as possible before the wrist break.

Another said dont think about the wrist break it happens natural.
Either way I am struggling to have any sort of game and just wish i could clear my mind but it is imposible for me to do this under the circumstances due to the all different kind of bad results I am getting.

When I practice my shots are great after 10 mins but even with some practice and start my round it all goes wrong,I am certain it is my backsing at fault unless I am unknowingly throwing the club from the top.P.s my driving is fine which only adds to my frustrations.

    Kino,

At the top what position is your right arm in? What do you do with your lower body in the swing? Please explain it in as much detail as you can.

Golf is such a fickle game, but we all love it so.

I have enjoyed playing golf with an old friend of mine that often makes the odd comment that is quite simple but very true.

One such quote is TODAYS CURE IS TOMORROWS FAULT.

Meaning what you have learnt today to improve your game will be inevitable over exaggerated the next time you play.

Make small changes only when trying out new moves. And practice it for a few rounds to get the muscles working in automatic.

My friend we have all had confidence knocked out of our game from time to time, the only way to gain it again is practice.

        Practice what you might say!!

Well practice what you are good at say putting and chipping?

Try to get those tight old muscles free and the confidence will return.

Golf has been put on this earth to make our lives a misery! Or are we just the lucky ones that can take a walk in the park and say hey I’m alive!!

Keep the mind free when you are about to make your swing and just let it happen.

Thinking about the swing prior to making the move/takeaway will lead to frustration and anxiety.

Yes well what about the takeaway you asked about!

Have you ever hit a nail into a wall kino? Would you think about the takeaway or the impact!!

Golf is that easy or as hard as you want to make it…..

        Regards Cliff

A very interesting thought about the nail in the wall cliff, somedays I do try and have a clear mind then when things start going wrong my confidence takes a hit maybe I need to be more ralaxed.

Golfbald my right arm appears to be almost vertical(not quite)when fully completed back swing. That is from elbow to hands.

From my shoulder to elbow I seem to be horizontal and if my right side is 12 0clock at address then it points at 2 oclock at the top of back swing, also my right arm is not very close to my body or the left arm is also not close to the right arm.

I know through videos and such my address is correct

I hope this helps I am not good at explanations

I used to lift my left heel on the back swing but was then told this was wrong, although I did find by lifting my left heel it helped me with my thoughts on weight transfer by planting the left heel back down before the downswing.

Since now I have no heel to plant I do find the timing of the transfer different and sometimes it feels like I am swaying through the shot.

At the momment I try and pull down using my left side of waist(I am right handed)then I use my arms, with no left heel to plant this is what I found easiest.

I do try and lift my right heel up on the downswing but i am certian it happens a lot latter than it should.

          Thanks again kino.

            Bare footin' !!!

            Kino,

To better feel the weight transfer in the transition, hit practice balls about half speed in your bare feet. Choke down about an inch on the club to compensate for the heel height of your shoes. The sensitivity level of your feet will enable you to feel the ankle roll and weight transfer. I often chip and pitch in bare feet around the green so I can feel the feedback of my body weigt staying on the front foot through the swing. I have used this for timing drills and would probably work in your case. Let yourself just feel and not think about anything. You will probably be able to pin pointthe problem area with this drill.

Please reply and tell me of your progress,

Yet one more way to feel the weight transfer in the transition of a golf swing.

Practice in soft shoes rap them with plastic and then take your stance on yet more plastic sheet.

Set up as you would do in a standard shot and see how much you slide from side to side.

Adjust your weight accordingly and try to understand the transition and its affects on your balance.

Please start the drill with only 50 percent of your swing speed. I would not want you to fall flat on your bottom.

If you are like me, then trying out a method like this in front of friends can be a bit daunting, so try it out at home on the patio without a ball, this practice drill will leave you with a feeling of pure timing and pace through the impact area, if done correctly.

It also sets the power in your swing to finesse and not brute strength.

              Good luck…

This may be a little premature but something definetly feels a whole lot better,I spent around 2 hours on the practice ground on bare feet feeling my weight shifting and especially lifting my right heel on the downswing.

I also picked up a tip from the link of the video tutorials that tony posted that may have slipped me when I have been researching by net video mag and book.

I found by placing the hands fairly close to my left thigh it closed the club face more naturally and also at the exact amount of closed face.

I also felt a whole lot more comfortable taking the club back, where as before it felt a little shaky, better still I managed divots something I been striving to do even with a wedge.

I have placed my hands ahead of the ball before but something just seem to click when my hands were placed closer to left thigh.

Not tried the plastic sheet yet but this willo be my next trial I have suddenly got a very good feeling.

My only hope now is I can play on a course like this, it was an amazing feeling of clean contact I was getting.

                  Watch out

                  Kino,

You better watch out you might start a new trend of practice in Scotland if people see you hitting in your bare feet!!! This is a great drill. I had all my high schoolers doing this on their last practice. Many made the same comment you did. It's a great revelation. Congratulations...

With any correction give it time to set in, it can't be a once and done thing. It takes 21 days to make a new habit. So doctors orders, take your shoes off for 21 days and call me in the morning!!! (LOL)

Good luck Kino, when you have questions just post!!!

It is often a good idea to take away (pun intended) all those swing thoughts and put them in the trashcan. Thats where I believe that most swing thoughts that manifest in phrase form belong.

Try this to capture an essence of a good start. Get a soccer ball or anything similar and then litterally throwing it in the opposite direction of your target.

You actually relaxfully sling the club back to start your swing in motion.

                      Clubface/wrists/

If you try to cock your wrists on the takeaway, you risk lifting the club too soon. Keep your grip light-say a 4 on scale of 10- and your wrists will actualy cock naturally. Tighten the grip and they won't cock.
I think rolling the forearms before impact actually will square up the clubface and give you more distance to boot. Its a timing issue and it takes practice.
One way to check the wrists is to take the club with normal-light-grip-and hold it out in front of you, then, move the wrists up and down---that is a wrist cock and that's the way it should feel.
Waggling before the backswing will also help you check that the grip is light and the wrists are active.
Tensing up before the backswing kills wrist cock, so waggle and take the backswing without taking much time at all. Amateurs look at the ball 80% of the time and the target 20% of the time, pro's do the opposite. Looking at the ball too long or staying stationary over the ball will cause the hands and wrists to tense up and get too tight.
Just a few thoughts to help, let me know how you do.
